🎃 Halloween is just around the corner! When it comes to candy and treats, there are ALWAYS better options, and many of them are right beside the traditional favorites.
**PAY ATTENTION TO INGREDIENTS!**
Many popular candies, like M&M’s, Skittles, candy corn, and so many others, contain ingredients worth paying attention to. Many still contain artificial colors and other additives.
Let’s use Skittles as an example. Their ingredients include sugar, corn syrup, hydrogenated palm kernel oil, artificial flavors, and color additives like Red 40, Yellow 5, and Blue 1, along with other ingredients.
When you look at an ingredient list like this, it’s worth asking yourself what you’re actually putting into your body.
Even the *better-for-you* versions of candy are still treats. They may have simpler ingredients, but they’re often still high in sugar. Just because an option is better doesn’t mean we need to eat it all the time.
This time of year, treats seem to be everywhere! Between Halloween parties, classroom celebrations, trick-or-treating, and the other holidays, it can quickly turn into one treat after another.
We know that nutrition plays an important role in our overall health, including supporting a healthy immune system. Constantly choosing highly processed foods over nourishing options can make it harder to meet our bodies’ nutritional needs and make us more susceptible to illness. Sugar feeds all the bad things in our body! This is a big reason why this time of the year many are constantly getting sick.
In our family, we choose better alternatives when we can or we swap out treats, and we do not overdo it. We do not miss out all the fun activities. We’ve personally seen how much food choices can impact our health, and it’s something we care about.
Does that mean we never enjoy a treat? Absolutely not! We’re human, too.
It’s okay to enjoy Halloween and have some candy! The goal isn’t perfection or restriction. It’s being mindful, reading labels, finding better alternatives, and teaching our kids to make informed choices.
Enjoy the treats, but don’t forget to nourish your body, too!
