🌱🎃 Evening pumpkin patch walk with Farmer Rupert! 🎃🌱

Tonight we’ve been out across the pumpkin patch looking for the best samples to take along to Open Farm Sunday tomorrow.

We’ve been trying to collect pumpkins and sunflowers from all the different growth stages so we can show everyone how they develop, from a tiny seed right through to where they are now. 🌻🎃

Farmer Rupert was on pumpkin spotting duty and, to be honest, he’s got a much better eye for it than Farmer Daddy! 👀😂

It’s amazing to see the different stages side by side and really appreciate just how much growth has happened over the last few weeks.

Tomorrow we’ll be showing visitors how we grow our pumpkins, sunflowers and strawberries, talking about the journey from seed to harvest, and giving everyone a chance to learn a little more about life on the farm. 🚜🌱

Who’s joining us tomorrow for Open Farm Sunday?

🚜🌾 SAVE THE DATE – OPEN FARM SUNDAY 🌾🚜

We’re excited to be supporting Newtons dairy Open Farm Sunday on Sunday 7th June from 11am–4pm!

After a 4-year absence, Newtons Dairy is once again opening its gates to the public, giving everyone the chance to see where their food comes from, meet the animals, and learn about modern farming and the work being done to farm more sustainably.

Farmer Dan and Farmer Rupert will also be there with our tractor and our brand-new pumpkin drill, helping to explain how we grow our crops and demonstrating some of the machinery we use on the farm.

🌻 Discover how sunflowers are grown
🎃 Learn how we plant and grow our pumpkins
🍓 See how our strawberries are produced
🚜 Tractor and trailer rides
🎨 Face painting and crafts
🌭 BBQ available
🧺 Or bring a picnic and enjoy the beautiful countryside views

It’s a fantastic day out for the whole family and a great opportunity to connect with local farming and food production.

We’d love to see you there!

🌱 Farmer Dan’s Weekend Watch Recommendat
Tonight I sat down and watched Groundswell on Prime Video and honestly, I think every farmer, grower and food lover should watch it.

The film follows farmers from around the world who are using regenerative farming practices to improve their soil, grow healthier crops and leave the land in a better condition for the next generation.

It’s amazing to see that many of the ideas featured in the film are things we’re already doing here at Libby’s Patch Farm.

🌾 Growing cover crops
🌾 Direct drilling into living roots
🌾 Reducing soil disturbance
🌾 Building soil biology
🌾 Keeping the ground covered for as much of the year as possible

Over the last few years we’ve used these methods across our pumpkins and sunflowers, planting directly into rye and vetch cover crops and experimenting with different ways of improving soil health while still producing fantastic crops for visitors to enjoy.

Watching the film really reinforces why we’re doing it.

Farming isn’t just about this year’s crop. It’s about looking after the soil so it can continue producing food, flowers and memories for generations to come.

Whether you’re a farmer, gardener, allotment holder or simply interested in where your food comes from, I’d genuinely recommend giving Groundswell a watch.

The future of farming might look very different to the past… and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

If you’ve watched it already, let me know what you thought! 👇

🎃 Farmer Dan has been out across all of the different pumpkin patches this evening, and honestly, he’s blown away by the progress!

Everywhere you look there are pumpkins at different stages of growth. Some are only just breaking through the soil, others are proudly showing their first true leaf, and many are already pushing on to their second leaf stage. 🌱

What’s really impressed me is seeing pumpkins popping through the thick rye mat that was grown over winter. The rye and vetch cover crop has done a fantastic job protecting the soil, holding moisture, suppressing weeds and creating the perfect environment for these little pumpkins to get established.

A few weeks ago these fields looked completely different. Now, wherever I walk, there are little pumpkin plants emerging and beginning their journey towards October. 🎃

There’s still a long way to go, and plenty of weather, pests and challenges between now and harvest, but so far I’m really pleased with how they’re looking.

It’s always exciting seeing the first signs that all the planning, drilling and hard work are starting to pay off. Now we just need a bit of sunshine and Mother Nature to keep doing her thing! ☀️

Who else is excited to see what these fields look like by pumpkin season?

🎃 Hey folks! Farmer Dan is out in the stubble pumpkin patch today!

🌱 Over the winter, he planted a cover crop, then mowed, baled, and direct-drilled with our brand-new drill.

✨ We’re so excited to see the pumpkins emerging—just look at them!

🌾 This is what regenerative farming is all about: building soil health and growing strong, healthy pumpkins.

Stay tuned for more updates! 🚜🎃

Farmer Dan is pacing up and down the Strawberry Mile, willing the strawberries to hurry up and ripen.

One minute he’s being kind and encouraging them, the next he’s getting a bit sharp and reminding them that we’ve got thousands of people waiting to come and pick them!

This time last year we’d already been open for two weeks and the fields were full of happy pickers. But last year we were right in the middle of a heatwave, and the strawberries absolutely loved it.

This year has been a different story. The cold snap we had earlier in the season really slowed everything down, and strawberries don’t like being rushed.

The good news is that there is an incredible amount of fruit out there. Everywhere you look, the plants are loaded. We just need a bit more sunshine and a little more patience.

Farming certainly teaches you that you can’t control everything. You can do all the hard work, but Mother Nature always has the final say.

Trust us, nobody wants these strawberries ready more than Farmer Dan!

The countdown is definitely on now. 🍓☀️
