Whatever space you sit in business or policy you can see what is happening right now. Environmental work is getting pushed aside. The focus is shifting back to short term extraction of land with little regard for long term value.

On the ground this is not theory. You see it in how projects get funded. You see it in what gets prioritised. Protecting landscapes is treated like a nice to have instead of a core part of survival.

But the facts do not change. Work shared by people like Michael Pollan keeps showing us plants are not passive. They are complex living systems that have evolved alongside us over time.

At Nguni Nursery every tree we grow and plant stands for something clear. It is not about ticking a greening box. It is about restoring systems and supplying high quality mature trees to our clients.

This work matters. The science backs it. The need is real. We keep going.

This is our new range of 70L Erythrina affra in UV protected bags which will be available soon.

Did you know?

The botanical name Erythrina caffra was given by Carl Peter Thunberg in 1770. He did not discover the tree. He recorded and named it. The word caffra came from Kaffraria, a colonial term used for the south east part of what is today Eastern Cape and into KZN “The land of Non Believers”.

This region formed part of Nguni territory where people practised indigenous belief systems. The term Kaffraria later produced the racist slur K@ff?r which still deep harm in South Africa similar to the N word in America. In July 2024 the International Botanical Congress in Madrid approved a rule to replace caffra with affra in plant names. More than 200 plant species carried the word.

As a business owned by Xhosa Nguni people this change carries strong meaning for us and we welcome it.

End of another week and progress continues. After water setbacks and low rainfall in our region citrus production starts again with support from the CRI foundation block. Certified rootstock seed and budwood keep the nursery on the path to citrus certification.

End of February already and what a week. Our first export order to Dubai for the year packed, passed all required tests and arrived safely today. After months of dry weather we finally had good rain on Tuesday and our new dam filled up. Grateful for quality, progress and consistency.
