Thursday was the first official week of gleaning at the market this season. What is gleaning?
Gleaning is a way to make good use of food from farms, producers, and even gardens that might otherwise not get eaten. The Central Maine Gleaners Group are volunteers who work with local farms to collect, sort, record, and distribute food so that more people can eat well. If one of our vendors decides they have food left at the end of market that they won’t be able to sell before it goes by, we donate it to the gleaners when they come around at closing time. Gleaners also sometimes visit farms and help harvest food that the farmers have determined is not economically worth paying labor to pick and process. In that case, the food would be turned into compost and feed the soil, but we’d much rather it feed people! Partnering with Central Maine Gelaners Group is just one of the ways our market helps with regional food security. We are so grateful for the work the gleaners do!
