Good morning!
Staying dry? It's been a very wet May, but the thing about a 45% chance of rain (as we had going into Saturday morning) is that that's also a 55% chance of NO rain. A lot of our vendors decided to stay home this past weekend, and they missed a beautiful morning. We didn't get a drop.
There a bunch of visitors, too (although it seemed like they arrived about an hour earlier than usual, trying to beat the weather) and many who were at our market from out-of-state, visiting family and friends for the Memorial Day weekend.
We had 62 vendors altogether, including (just like every weekend) a pair with us for the first time. Angie Tucker makes herb-infused oils, and Sharon Baisley set up (without a canopy: that's optimism!) with her beautiful stained glass pictures and angels. Welcome to our market family.
We're currently raising money for the FOCUS Food Bank. Based in Hamilton, FOCUS (which stands for Fellowship Of Christians United in Service) serves families throughout Harris County. In addition to food assistance, they also operate a thrift store, recovery programs, youth programs, emergency services, and other community services. We're happy to support such a deserving ministry, but with the dampened turnout several weeks already this season, we're behind pace to raise the $2000 our market is planning to give them this season, so look for the donation box near the bench on Saturday mornings, or the purple DONATE button at the bottom of our website, www.MidlandMarket.org.
That's also where you go to reserve a space for each Saturday's market. That'll happen at 6:00 tonight, but we had 198 visitors all trying for the 38 reservation spaces last week, so not everyone will be successful. Not to worry, that's why we have another three dozen drop-in spaces. You can come get one any Saturday, but they're first-come first-pick, so don't be the 37th person looking for one.
Enjoy the day off, but remember: Memorial Day isn't a day for us veterans, but for the ones who didn't make it back home, and gave their lives in service to our country. Maybe pour one out for them too.
We're 2 and 2 for good weather in May, and this coming Saturday is showing about a 50% chance of rain too, so it's going to be a toss-up. Don't let a few sprinkles discourage you. Come on out this weekend. I'll see you out there!
Regards, Larry
