Sussex County Board of Agriculture's The Gracie's Scholarship application is now available. Seldom in one's life does one meet a truly dynamic personality. The Sussex County Board of Agriculture had the privilege of meeting such a spirited soul. Grace Honigsberg was not just involved in Agriculture, Agriculture was her way of life, and her life's passion.
She was Miss Frankford Township in 2013 and a graduate of High Point High School. She was very active in Sussex County 4-H as a member in her youth and as a leader of several livestock clubs as an adult. Grace was a member of several livestock associations and won top national awards for her livestock. She was the 2013 Sussex County Youth Agricultural Ambassador. She was a member of the Sussex County Board of Agriculture receiving the Next Generation of Agriculture Award in 2015. Ms. Honigsberg was a member of the NJ Farm Bureau and served as past president of the NJ Young Farmer’s and Ag Professionals. Her passion for agriculture led Grace to travel nationally, representing the state of NJ at several American Farm Bureau events, with a focus on accurate agriculture education.
It is in Gracie's honor that the Sussex County Board of Agriculture announces the formation of a yearly Agricultural Scholarship of $500 a year to any student focusing her/his education in the field of Agriculture.
In forming this Scholarship we know that Gracie's enthusiasm, joyous spirit and love of all things agricultural will continue in Sussex County and beyond. If you are interested in continuing your Agriculture education this scholarship is open for you, no matter your GPA, for college or technical school, student or adult. HO HO HO! The Sussex County Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market will host THREE celebrities at the December 13th Christmas Craft Fair at the Fairgrounds, from 10 am to 3pm. Santa himself will accompany Zy Saturnees, one of the youngest authors in Sussex County. Zy will be signing his new book “Jill The Chick”. Both Santa and Zy will be available for pictures with your child! Zy’s book is a cute farm story about a young chick’s adventures, great reading for all ages. 4-H Club Awesome Alpaca’s famous Santa Al will make an appearance to give kisses for that perfect Christmas picture! The 4-H Club Rhapsody in Color will be conducting a Christmas sing along.
The Sussex County Farmers’ Market Christmas Craft Fair showcases local artisan crafts perfect for giving this holiday season. Original Ja’mez crafted jewelry, fragrant handmade goat soaps, fabulous photographs that feature Sussex County’s beauty, crocheted and sewn novelties, are available for unique Christmas gifts. Free Pumpkin give away this Saturday October 25th, at the Sussex County Farmers and Crafters Market! Kids that come in Halloween costumes will receive a free mini pumpkin to decorate. Our farmers, 4-Hers and crafters will be in costume also. This should bee zoo-larious! Witch pumpkin will your little ghoul or buoy choose? Special Trick or Treat bags are available or skin friendly goat soaps to take off that Halloween makeup. (Don’t worry the soap won’t turn you into a goat! GET YOUR TICKETS NOW! The Sussex County Board of Agriculture will hold it’s annual Chicken BBQ on Saturday, September 20th at the Sussex County Fairgrounds from 5 to 7 pm. “The Board of Ag Chicken BBQ started during the Sussex County Farm and Horse show in 1941,” states head chef Art Fetzer. “We served 1500 dinners!” The savory BBQ chicken is flavored by time tested Charles Pratschler’s famous recipe. The chicken is slow roasted by Board of Ag members. In addition to delicious chicken, diners will receive golden corn on the cob from Ideal Farms and the DeGroot Family Farm. Local red ripe tomatoes come from Green Valley, Anderson, and Lentini farms. The buttery rolls are from The Holland American Bakery. The delicious meal is topped off with yummy chocolate chip cookies for dessert. The savory chicken comes from Sussex Meat Packing.
Music at this year’s BBQ will be the melodious voice of Darren Rist, a local country singer whose style centers around an Americana sound, playing a mix of old and new country folk, rock and originals. The addition of a cash bar with beer and wine makes a festive BBQ. This BBQ brings together the local farmers and the general public for great comradely.
An annual fundraiser for the Board of Ag, the BBQ helps support scholarships for Sussex County students seeking a career in agriculture, the 4-H shows with ribbons and awards at the NJ State Fair, 4-H ers traveling to National livestock shows, Young Farmers and Ranchers programs and educational trips and programs for Sussex County Farmers.
Tickets are $20 in advance, and may be purchased at Anderson Farms, Brodhecker Farms, Hidden Pastures, Ideal Farms, Lentini Farm, Space Farms, Sussex County Fairgrounds and online at sussexcountyboardofagriculture.org .
