Tight Lines, the monthly newsletter outlines all upcoming events and other articles of interest. Club activites include invited speakers at monthly meetings; onstream days where members can fish local waters with an experienced angler; club trips further afield; activities for juniors; tuition in flyfishing, casting and fly tying; as well as maintaining the Capital Trout Centre - a 40m pond stocked with rainbow trout where junior anglers and other groups can experience flyfishing.

🎏 Report: Inter-Club Flytying Competition - 2 November 2026 🦗🕷🪳🐝🪲🐞🪰🦟🦂

This year the Wellington Fly Fishers Club hosted the annual interclub fly tying competition. Teams of four from the Kapiti, Hutt Valley and Wellington Fly fishing Clubs competed for a trophy.🏆

Each team consisted of three experienced tyers who each tied two flys and one novice who tied one fly.🪲🦟

Our team of 4 flytyers Paul, Strato, Brian and Andrew did very well. 👏

The Hutt Valley Angling Club won🥇🏆, closely followed by Wellington 🥈and the Kapiti Flyfishing Club.🥉

Thanks to all involved in the event set up, the judge, the supporters who came along to the event and to Carmen and Julia for providing a delicious supper. 👏

If you've ever wanted to have a go flytying, members meet monthly on the 3rd Monday of each month. Coming up is the cicada pattern, just in time for summer. 🪲

Report on October Meeting Presentation - Fishing in Belize 🇧🇿 by Warren Horne and Brian Benson

The ambition of most flyfishers is to find a secluded stream, with beautiful surroundings where they can be successful in persuading a rainbow or brown trout to accept your fly presentation, especially if it is one you’ve tied yourself.

For others however, the prey are much larger and flyfishing all around the world extends to salmon and a whole series of marine fish. 🌎🎣🐠🐡🦈

Brian and Warren recently visited the central American nation of Belize with their main target being the hyperactive tarpon.🦈

Fishing from boats in rivers which sometimes were kilometres wide, this was an exercise in patience for which they were ultimately rewarded. Battling one of these monsters is somewhat different than a four pound rainbow in the Tongariro and the presentation that they gave to the club recently, on their trip will certainly hold special memories for them and perhaps encourage other club members to seek an overseas trip of their own.

Report - Flytying Night, October 2026 - Royal Wulff 👑 🐺 🪝

Another good attendance at the October flytying night which included six enthusiastic young lads, some of whom had never tied a fly before.

The Royal Wulff can be a bit tricky, especially for newbies but they all did their best and created some excellent versions of this popular fly.

Thanks to Ross who helped with some of the young lads.

With summer almost here, next month’s fly will be the cicada, which will also be a challenge.

👑🦟Fly of the month - Royal Wullf 👑🦟

The Royal Wulff is a must have in any fly box, especially deadly on Rainbows 🐟 who find it hard to resist.

Originated by master angler Lee Wulff around 1930 to imitate a beetle 🪲, it has stood the test of time virtually unchanged ever since. It can be used almost anywhere. 🎣

Monday 19 October 2026, 7.30pm - 4 Moncrief Street, Mount Victoria, Wellington. Tararua Tramping Club,
Locker Room (Access through side door on north side of building)
Members welcome.

🩵🐟💙 Report: September Club Trip - Turangi, 18-20 September 2026 💙🐟🩵

Reports that the fishing on the Lake Taupo rivers had not been good in previous weeks, did not bode well for the club trip.

By midday Friday four of us were fishing the Tongariro but only a couple of fish to show for our efforts.

However a couple of us fished the Hinemaiaia and the Waiotaka on Saturday which produced 23 fish landed. 💙🐟🩵 The ones from the Hinemaiaia while including a few nice fish yet to spawn, did not include any fresh run fish whereas the Waiotaka was a mixture.

The Tongariro continued to fish very hard despite the recreational release on Saturday and Sunday but added a few more to the total.

One of our group, stayed on for Monday and fished the Tauranga Taupo with great success. 🎣🎣🎣

Our impressive total was 44 given the circumstances 👍 but one of our vehicles was broken into in the Grace Road carpark (together with another vehicle) which put a damper on our success celebrations. 🚗😢

🟡🪝⚫️🪰 Report: September Fly tying - Bead Head Hare & Copper Nymph 🟡🪝⚫️🪰

There was a very pleasing turnout for the September flytying evening.

Twelve members attended and learned to tie a bead head hare & copper nymph.

There was a good exchange of assistance and banter from the more experienced flytyers and everyone enjoyed the chocolate bars offered by Ross Pritchard. 😋🍫🍫🍫

Report: Capital Trout Centre Open Day - 4 October 2026 🎏

A beautifully fine day 🌞 added to the enjoyment while 103 very excited young anglers turned up for the Open Day at the Capital Trout Centre. 👧🏼🧑🎣🎏

With lots of help from equally enthusiastic club members the cries of “I caught a fish” from the youngsters, made it a special day. 😊

Many thanks to the club members who helped on the mound, and in the shed, gutting the fish, writing out certificates, recording all the catch details and cooking sausages.
👏📄🖊🌭🌭🌭🏆

The next Open Day is Sunday December 6th and registration licences will be available from the 24th November.
