HIANYU COMMUNITY.
Research Conclusion: The Future of Small-Scale Farming in HianyuAfter two years of field research, I am officially concluding my study on the role of technology in small-scale farming, using the Hianyu community as a primary case study. The findings are transformative: technology is not just a tool; it is the bridge between traditional cultural values and modern social mobility. My research tracked how farming in Hianyu is the central pillar connecting family, politics, health, and education.
Key Takeaways for My Network & Partners:
The Power of Youth: I am deeply inspired by the Hianyu Youth Group. Their dedication to forward-thinking initiatives proves that when small-scale farmers embrace technology, it reshapes the entire socio-economic landscape. Their hard work is a blueprint for success that deserves continued government and private support.
A Model for Education: Hianyu Comprehensive School stands as a beacon of excellence. By integrating organic kitchen gardens and maize cultivation into their curriculum, they are proving that sustainable, organic methods are both practical and scalable.
Cultural Synergy: This journey allowed us to engage with cultural values that we could never have accessed otherwise. Respecting these traditions is what allowed the technology to truly “take root.
“To Stakeholders:Hianyu is a testament to the untapped potential of small-scale farming. The infrastructure for success is here driven by a hardworking youth population and a community that understands the value of organic, tech-enabled growth.
A heartfelt thank you to every member of the Hianyu community who opened their doors and their fields to me. I leave “in orbit” with a new vision for what is possible. Asante sana Hianyu 🙏🏻house.kenya .kiariebadilisha

Hianyu Youth Champions.
Youth-Led Vermicomposting for Sustainable Waste Management, Community Empowerment, and Green Jobs

The Hianyu Youth Champions have established a vermicomposting unit as a practical intervention promoting sustainable waste management, climate-smart agriculture, and community-driven development.
The project involves the rearing of composting worms in three distinct bins, each utilizing different organic waste materials to produce nutrient-rich organic fertilizers:
• Bin 1: Goat manure and potatoes
• Bin 2: Farm weeds
• Bin 3: Eggshells and pea leaves

By comparing the outputs from each bin, the youth are assessing how different feedstock influences fertilizer quality and crop performance. The resulting vermicompost will be tested in greenhouse trials to evaluate its impact on soil health and plant productivity.
Beyond environmental benefits, the initiative plays a key role in community empowerment and job creation by:
• Building practical skills in organic waste recycling and sustainable agriculture
• Creating opportunities for youth-led green enterprises
• Reducing production costs for local farmers through affordable organic fertilizers
• Encouraging community participation in responsible waste management practices

Alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
• SDG 2: Zero Hunger
• SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
• SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
• SDG 13: Climate Action

Through innovation, skills development, and environmental stewardship, the Hianyu Youth Champions are demonstrating how youth-led solutions can drive sustainable livelihoods and resilient communities.house.kenya

Hianyu Youth Champions Leading Climate Action

The Hianyu Youth Champions are making a powerful and positive impact through the establishment of a dedicated tree nursery. This initiative reflects their strong commitment to environmental conservation and practical action against climate change.
By planting and nurturing young trees, the youth are contributing to increased green cover, improved air quality, and long-term carbon absorption. Tree nurseries play a critical role in climate resilience by restoring ecosystems, preventing soil erosion, and supporting biodiversity.
Beyond environmental benefits, this initiative also empowers young people with knowledge, responsibility, and leadership in climate action. It demonstrates that meaningful change begins at the community level, driven by informed and motivated youth.
The Hianyu Youth Champions’ tree nursery is more than a project it is a sustainable investment in the future of our planet and a clear example of how youth-led action can drive positive environmental change.
Together, we grow solutions for a greener tomorrow.house.kenya

Hianyu Youth Champions Demonstrating Climate-Smart Agriculture
The Hianyu Youth Champions are actively engaged in practical agricultural innovations, including the establishment of a raised bed for seedling production. This activity was designed to assess and compare the performance of a raised bed system versus a conventional ground bed.
The raised bed approach has demonstrated excellent results, reinforcing the value of sustainable and efficient farming practices. This initiative directly contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly:
SDG 2: Zero Hunger - by promoting
improved food production techniques
SDG 13: Climate Action - through climate-
smart agricultural practices
• SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic
Growth - by empowering youth with practical, income-generating skills
Through such initiatives, the Hianyu Youth Champions continue to drive innovation, sustainability, and youth leadership in agriculture.house.kenya
