Setting up all the hives for winter in each Apiary. Any boxes of honey or empty spaces on top of the brood box are removed or placed under the brood box. Less space for bees to lose heat. All the hives are checked & weighted to make sure they are bursting with their own honey & secured. Frosty nights now and bees will cluster together at night & break cluster when warm enough during the day to forage winter pollen from Ivy & soon Gorse. Bees will need to collect water to dilute honey 50%. Queens will slow down laying. In mid spring Ivy honey which was removed will be given back to the bees if needed. Few Apiaries to finish up yet.

Supervalu half arsed new labels still do not meet the requirements for traceability of imported honey. Thanks to Sophie Morris for highlighting this. Irish beekeepers can never meet supply because of our climate & size of our Island but we expect compliance with labeling regulations from supermarkets

🍯 Late Summer & Autumn Honey 🍯

Honey harvested in late summer and autumn is always something special. With nectar from heather, ivy and other late-season forage, it develops a wonderfully distinctive flavour, with rich and interesting floral notes that you simply don’t get at other times of the year. 🌿🐝

But this honey comes with its challenges! It’s often much thicker and more gel-like, and ivy honey in particular can crystallise very quickly. This means harvesting requires different techniques and a little more patience to coax the honey from the comb.

So, it’s slow going here at Killucan Honey Farm for the next few weeks as we work through this beautiful late-season honey — but it’ll be worth the wait! 🍯🐝

Season is coming to an end soon, bees are on the last forage of the year which is Ivy honey. We don't feed our bees, they are left with plenty of their own honey to over winter on.
