Lovely to see Eric the town crier this morning. 90 years young and with a packed Saturday of public engagements to visit around the town he couldn’t stay long. He is a member of Cricklade Court Leat who administers grazing on North Meadow, the Lammas meadow where we make our hay (and home to 800,000 snakes head fritillaries). His family were farmers on North Meadow and last year he came for a spin around the meadow whilst I was tedding hay in the passenger seat. He was keen to book his spot for this years hay cut which again will be an honour.

At the Cricklade plant fair. Lots of locally grown plants, homemade cakes from the WI and of course local beef. Always a busy and friendly event. Quite appropriately I am right under the massive original painting of the Roasting The Ox which happened here 89 years ago.

We move our cattle along the roads quite a bit. Today it all went very smoothly, but then I reckon the cows remember this move as they end up doing it twice a year. Interesting to see a hedge as wide as the road.

Another chilly but bright day. Lots of grass ahead of these ladies. Cuckoo going for it and hundreds of starlings waiting to drop it.

After some busy days in the butchery we are open at Waterhay Farm 11-1 this morning for order collections and beef sales. Got some nice ribeyes, plus chuck and more. Lots of our beef also available Lydiard Turkeys and Pop up Farm Shop 10-12 today and tomorrow. Enjoy!

Off to pastures new……
A couple of times a year our cattle cross the river Thames to get to fields on the other side. Sometimes they only just get their feet wet, other times it’s proper swimming. And yes our cows float and can definitely swim. Today it was 80 of them and it all went well. Notice the fences in the river - without these some would go up or downstream, it has happened…

So this has been a wonderful rabbit hole. Really tactile, an evening project, and what’s better than playing catch in the sunshine. I’m a frustrated potential cricket ball maker so making baseballs is the easy option! This one is home tanned sheep leather.

St George’s mushrooms! A brilliant seasonal treat found whilst mooving the cows. I have about 4 productive rings of these on the farm, but even then they are tricky to find due to being completely covered in grass. Awesome with butter and a bit of garlic on toast.
