A wonderful writeup and reference to Grace the Beetle from guests who ate with us here at Flambé@Mud
Katberg Recce Trip
Our final leg back to base was from Knysna to Cape Town - a seemingly easy drive along the N2 of 420 km.
All was going well till we reached the first stop-go just west of Mossel Bay. It was a full 25 minute wait until a queue of vehicles approximately 2 km long had backed up behind us.
It’s a strange thing that when this long queue of vehicles gets going again the speeds oscillates greatly resulting in too much braking and accelerating.
By the time we reached the fourth stop-go the behaviour of some impatient drivers was creating dangerous situations, so we escaped the insanity at Riversdale and took the Garcia’s Pass to the R62 and stopped for lunch at a delightful eatery in Barrydale called MUD.
Parked outside was this gorgeous 1964 VW Beetle which belongs to one of the owners. (More pics in the comments section)
The restaurant is exactly on point in every department. From fine dining in the main dining room with a baby grand piano begging to be played, to a light and airy outside terrace for more casual light meals.
It is here where the name of the restaurant becomes evident. The walls have been built with slate interlaced with mud, creating an earthy and peaceful vibe amidst succulents and bougainvillea for colour.
The food was perfect and jazz played over a high quality sound system at just the right volume sealed the picture.
Pure class.
