This week:

-Nell sold her bottle lamb to a connection we made through our sheep shearer. That really blessed all the farm kids hearts.

-We canned more apples: jams, pie filling, dehydrated apple slices.

-Harvested the last of our pasture raised chickens and turkeys. We still have 2 large turkeys available if you are interested.

-Had our last big harvest of the market season.

-Did school, had a driving lesson, amd a cross country meet.

-Had our last Lake Bluff Market of the year.

-Our homeschool co-op launched for the year, signaling a shift to more focussed school work.

-Hosted a party for our cross-country team.

No edits. Sounds from today's harvest in the pouring fall rain as the carrots got their initial spray down.

Our turkeys are raised in small batches. They are moved about the property daily where they can be happy turkeys, pecking at bugs and scratching the earth. We use them as effective management against pests all over the farm, including in the garden, where they also get to enjoy the spoils of fruits past their prime. Happy turkeys grown right taste better, their texture is evidence of their life spent roaming happily.

We have fallen in love with raising turkeys, they are one of the kids favorite animals to raise. We also see their beneficial role to the farmstead, our soils, and our good health.

This week we:

-Enjoyed time with family from out of town.

-Chased the sow and her babies in more times than is reasonable, set electric netting around her pen. After a breakout into the netting she decided she might as well stay put.

-Continued the fight with the mower while the grass length mocks us....considering grazing the "lawn" and grass areas around the garden.

-Whacked some farmkid hair off. Any guesses based on the hair pile?

-Canned more salsa from tomatoes rejected at market.

-Savored the last picking of these beans as we transition to the planting that will take us into the first frost.

-Harvested, weeded greens beds, turned our eyes away from weeds in other areas...they are cover crops now.

-Moved meat chickens and turkeys daily.

-Had the bulk grain bin filled and refilled the automatic feeder for the field hogs.

-Hauled spent garden goodies and canning scraps endlessly to the hogs and chickens.

-Raced in one cross country meet. The middle school girls are doing great, shaving lots of time off their personal bests.

-Plodded along in school. It requires a lot of discipline to steward the responsibility of educating a person. I'm grateful for the flexibilty to do what we do as a family. The farm kid who goes to market usually has school wrapped up for the week by Friday, and continues with literature assignments while enjoying the most perfect bench at market.

-I don't want to forget that farming with kids means the cold room usually takes a little deciphering....What is a pirate's favorite misspelled vegetable?! 😀 🏴‍☠️

That's it.

The reality of being a real family farm with a mom as the main farmer.

This week:

-We grilled 250 doughnuts for a crowd (off-farm), not healthy, but soul-filling

-Spent time with grandparents from out of state and enjoyed the water ski show in town!

-Noticed the signs nature is giving that fall is moving in and winter is on it's way

-Harvested

-Not pictured: battled cabbage worms that escaped previous notice

-Raced cross-country a few times (no pics of high schoolers)

-Canned beans that weren't market worthy

-Canned salsa with reject tomatoes

-Skipped Grayslake Market because life and the weather both conspired against us at once

-Fed lots of garden goodies to pigs

-Moved chickens and turkeys on the daily

This week on the farm:

-We canned tomatoes for us

-Dehydrated tomatoes for us

-Harvested the beginning of more fall crops, noticing the tension between summer holding on with tomatoes and fall moving in with kale and radishes

-Farmed in the morning while it was cool, then did school when it wasn't

-Sweat. A lot

-Skipped Wednesday evening market in Grayslake because of the heat and sheer exhaustion

-Went to Duke's Ale House in Crystal Lake for dinner and captured the moment the farm kids noticed THEIR farm is on the menu. The farm paid for dinner (board of directors meeting), which really means that the kids paid for dinner.

-Enjoyed lots of cold and raw foods this week to beat the heat, always enjoyed more with homemade ranch

-Chased pigs back into their electric fencing. They keep rooting mud onto the lines because it's been so wet. We are especially grateful we have a phyiscal fence now.

-Moved our last batch of chickens out onto grass

-Had to harvest some in the afternoons between storms, which wasn't fun, but it got done

-Left for market in Lake Bluff in the morning moonlight, noticing the shift in seasons and the slowing of growth in the garden
