After the winter cover crop is cut, the fields don’t stay empty for long.
As soon as harvest wraps up, it’s time to start planting the next crop. Planters and drills are rolling almost immediately, and manure from the pits is spread back onto the freshly planted ground to return nutrients to the soil.
This year’s custom mix includes cow peas, a variety of beans, forage sorghum, vetch, peanuts, sorghum sudan, sunn h**p, and sunflowers — all selected to help build soil health and produce quality forage for the cows. Diversity in species is where the nutrient density and the flavor in the milk comes from.
While the dump truck gets parked until fall, the rest of the equipment keeps moving. Farming seasons may change, but the work rarely slows down. 🌱
