When I’m not gardening or cooking or baking, I am a jack-of-a-lot-of-other-trades. If it’s creative, I have probably dipped my finger in it. One of those trades is I am a professional singer and I have a band in Texas. Last weekend, we performed at Texas Poitou Donkeys … I think that was our third time to play out there. It is an insanely cool place run by really awesome guys.

Texas Poitou Donkeys are a critically endangered heritage breed of large French donkeys raised by Patrick Archer and Christopher Jones in Grandview, Texas. Known for their massive size (up to 950 pounds) and iconic dreadlock-like coats, this Texas facility maintains the largest breeding herd of these "gentle giants" in the United States.

Eating what we grow … it just makes me happy! There’s a feeling of accomplishment, but it’s also this complete knowledge of where it came from. Full circle kind of thing and I love it!

Did you know that when you grow your own onions, not only is the bulb edible, so are the green tops just like if you were buying green onions at the store? 

I was making one of my favorite summer salads and needed a small amount of onion. It’s so cool to just be able to walk out to our dry storage and select an appropriate size onion instead of having to run to the store for one.

Not everything that comes out of the garden is a good thing … this guy is the  tomato hornworm (Manduca quinquemaculata).
He’s one of the largest and most destructive caterpillars found in home vegetable gardens. Despite their massive size, their bright green coloring allows them to blend in almost perfectly with plant stems and leaves.

Despite looking intimidating, the horn cannot sting, and the caterpillar is completely harmless to humans.

Hornworms feed exclusively on plants in the nightshade (Solanaceae) family. While they prefer tomatoes, they will also relentlessly eat peppers, eggplants and potatoes. They can strip a plant overnight!

The Blacklight Trick: Go out into your garden at night with a UV/blacklight flashlight. Hornworms naturally fluoresce and glow a bright neon green under UV light, making them incredibly easy to find.

Passiflora Incarnata AKA Passion Flower AKA Maypop if you live in the South. Doesn’t matter what they’re called to me … they’re my favorite and if they took over the landscape I’d be a happy girl.

It is highly celebrated for its complex, tropical-looking blooms, edible fruits and therapeutic properties.

AND it just happens to be my favorite fruit flavor of all time. You can imagine my joy seeing new blooms this year.

We harvested our potato laundry baskets yesterday. I’m very happy with the harvest. These potatoes were planted on March 6 in four tall laundry baskets with layers of straw, compost and soil. 

11 days ago I dehaulmed all of the potato plants. Dehaulming is the agricultural practice of removing the foliage, leaves, and stems (haulms) of a potato plant before harvesting the underground tubers. It is a crucial step for preventing disease transmission and toughening the potato skins for long-term storage.

This step is often skipped by most. If you simply pull up your potato plants and wash the potatoes, you pretty much have to eat them immediately. They will not long-term store. The skins will shrivel and the potential is there for the skins also slipping.

By letting the tubers stay in the soil for 10 to 14 days after dehaulming and then harvesting, the skins have now cured and we can now store our potatoes for months in our cool dry storage.
