Westby Creamery was excited to welcome the USDA Partners for Rural America Tour in early October.
The visit offered an opportunity to showcase how modernizing our cottage cheese production can strengthen operations, improve efficiency, support our employees, and create opportunities for our rural community.
By sharing our transition from traditional, open-vat production to new, fully enclosed equipment, we were proud to highlight how innovation can help sustain rural businesses and the communities they serve.
We were pleased to welcome 56 participants from across the country and share a first-hand look at the future of cottage cheese production in Westby!

🍁🎃🍂🐮October…SLOW DOWN!!! This month has gone by so fast and the icy breath of colder weather has already crept in at night here in the Driftless region. And as the temperature plays its up and down game of Autumn, we continue to get more projects done on the farm. Painting and building repairs, moving heifers and bales of hay, and cleaning equipment for winter storage have kept us busy on these golden days of fall. I hope the warmth and the next month go slower for everyone!🐮🍂🎃🍁

✨🛸🐮🚀🍂🌽🌖Autumn looks to be here to stay as another busy week on the farm comes to an end. We wrapped up summer with the harvest of our corn crop here at the home farm and more beautiful calves being born. As the trees start to change colors and we go from growing to preparing for the long months ahead, we’re especially grateful for our custom chopping crew and for a good harvest and for all the blessings of this beautiful year so far!

And thank you to everyone who shared “space themed” name ideas for our red and white Holstein calf born to Gemini last week! We loved all the suggestions and finally chose Galaxy for her and we think it fits her so well! ✨🐄

🐄🚜🧀It’s never too early to connect with the next generation of farmers. Westby Creamery CEO JD Greenwalt had the opportunity to do just that when Ben Klinkner’s children visited the Creamery for a tour of the new cottage cheese-making equipment.

Ben, the Creamery’s board president, represents the sixth generation of his family to farm near Cashton, Wis., while his children represent the seventh. It’s a wonderful reminder of the strong farming traditions that help shape the future of our cooperative.🧀🚜🐄
