The food? Pepperoni rolls, biscuits and gravy, and something homemade that hits harder than any restaurant ever could.
The energy? Peaceful… until the fog rolls in and the road disappears like it was never there.
You’ll move away…
but still slow down on curves like a deer’s about to make eye contact with your soul.
Still check the weather like it actually matters—
because in the mountains, it always does.
Still hear someone say, “It’s just up the road…”
and know that could mean 10 minutes… or a whole adventure through switchbacks and gravel.
You’ll measure distance in time, turns, and elevation.

West Virginia has produced its fair share of hardworking, determined people who’ve gone on to do big things. One man born in Fairmont and raised in the small coal town of Monongah grew up surrounded by that grit and determination. He carried those values with him when he played high school football, even leading his team to a state championship in 1968 as quarterback.
His career took him far beyond the hollers of West Virginia. After college, he jumped into coaching, starting out as a graduate assistant and slowly working his way up through the ranks. Along the way, he turned down an offer from Bobby Bowden at WVU, a “what if” moment in sports history.
No matter how far he traveled, he never lost touch with home. He has often spoken about the people of Monongah and the work ethic they instilled in him. Even after achieving legendary success, he never forgot where he came from.
Now, after stepping away from coaching, he received one of the greatest honors his home state can give: induction into the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2025.
The man? None other than Nick Saban.

A 1911 picture showing a typical group of youngsters ages nine to fourteen at the end of a 10 hour shift in an unidentified WV coal mine. A day's wages averaged 50-75 cents. These children worked six days a week breaking up large chunks of coal, picking out slate and other impurities, and greasing coal cars. Labor laws were passed to stop the usage of children in industrial settings.
