Witte's Vegetable Market, LLC - West Bend

Witte's Vegetable Market, LLC - West Bend Witte's Vegetable Market, LLC is a locally owned and operated family farm in West Bend, WI. The farm store is open from June through December.

Witte's Vegetable Market LLC is an IPM Vegetable farm focused on providing West Bend, Jackson, and our surrounding communities with the best and freshest vegetables and fruits. We have a farm store open 7 days a week where 90% of all items are grown on our farm. We also attend the West Bend Farmers Market on Saturday mornings where we sell 100% of what we grow. The farm was started by Dad and Mom

in 1992 with the purchase of 56 acres. Since that time we have acquired more land, built a few more buildings, and rebuilt the original building after a fire 4 years ago. We currently farm about 50 acres of vegetables with another 10 acres left for cover crops to rotate and maintain soil health. Every year we start with asparagus and end with items such as brussel sprouts, winter squash, beets, potatoes, and carrots. The main crop season for us is usually from the end of July through the end of September. During that time you will find Pickles, Sweet Corn, Musk Melon, Watermelon, Tomatoes, Peppers, and about 20 other different vegetables.

June 13th- no self serve

Well, Mom is back down at the West Bend Farmers Market. She has rhubarb, spring mix, spinach, radishes, kohlrabi, head lettuce, and garlic scapes. Unfortunately, that means no self serve today or tomorrow at the farm. Dad is busy culivating and hilling potatoes and Tiffany and I are finishing up planting fall squash and decorations. With the rain chance this afternoon some things are just more important than picking more stuff. Have a wonderful weekend.

We are open today at 12. We will have a limited amount of berries and other fresh produce. Now onto the important item of the day. Please help me wish Mom and Dad a happy 44th wedding anniversary. Marriage is not easy. It takes a lot of give and take and finding the right person that shares in all your crazy dreams. Happy anniversary Mom and Dad and thank you for setting a great example for my own marriage.

June 11th- continuation from last night

Thank you to all of our wonderful customers and friends who read our post last evening and offered words of encouragement. Humbling is the right word for the emotion Tiffany and I both feel. Just know I don't share for acknowledgement but to better educate and reconnect the threads that are unraveling in today's modern world. So today I want to expound on something I shared last night. Why do I personally not like growing strawberries? Well, in Wisconsin they are extremely unpredictable and ever changing. You don't have to look any farther then this season to know that. What use to be a true 17 to 21 day season has now been condensed into 14 to 17 days with extreme seasons being even shorter. Fresh strawberries are not self stable like the ones in the store, so it's sell them that day or the next. Don't even get me started on the weather. I'm sure their are other crops just as bad but boy are strawberries easily affected by the weather. Lastly, with this season being so hyper focused it creates a lot of undo stress as we are all pulled in different directions. With Tiffany, Mom, and Dad handling the berry side of things from start to finish and Me handling the harvesting, hoeing, and planting crews. I am always so thankful that we are not a strawberry farm but rather a vegetable farm who also grows strawberries. So as the season unfolds this year hopefully we will absorb this loss and make up for it with a bumber crop elsewhere. Again I just want to say thank you and please reach out to one of the other strawberry farms in the area. We are blessed to be rich in our area with small family farms still trying to make a go at it. Below I have tagged three other strawberry farms.

June 10th- Strawberry reality

So much of social media is fake, staged, posed, or whatever you want to call it. So tonight lets get real. I, Gus, have no love loss with strawberries. It has been long known since I was little if you want to keep Gus happy keep him far away from the berry fields. So berries have always been my dad's thing and I help when asked but otherwise I'm hands off. Now about 3 years ago Tiffany jumped in and started helping and learning. She mainly runs the picking crew with my mom, but has shown interest in how the crop grows. So to watch both of them so defeated by the outcome of this years crop is heartbreaking. Right after we uncovered the berries, dormancy broke, and we end up with all that rain back in April. Things were acting as normal. Then in May for 12 nights dad ran the irrigation to frost protect and saved all of the blossoms and in turn, so did mom because at 66 they do most everything together. Things looked normal. Then in late May as we were in near drought conditions and we switched over the irrigation to putting on water instead of frost protecting. Things still looked normal. However, over the past week Dad and Tiffany both agreed something wasn't normal. Now add the the heat, humidity, and rain things just didnt pan out this year for us. Tonight as I got home Tiffany gave me an extremely impassioned speech which I will give you the cliff note version. "If someone actually knew what it took to grow strawberries at this scale they wouldn't say so many sh**** things." So lets be honest we didn't set our price we called the 3 largest berry farms around and asked what they were charging. Instead of undercutting them we fell in line. $7.50 was the going price. Now are we done for the season, I don't know? Our standard is high so if the berries don't survive the humidity, rain, and heat without soft spots, watery flavor, or any other imperfections then yes we will be done. I feel terrible for our customers our pickers and my family. However, this is reality and it happens way more than social media let's on. We will update Friday.

June 10th- tune in tonight

Well here it is the 1st day that the door will be raised. Our pickers, many 1st timers, did an amazing job this morning. We expect to have roughly 300 qts when we open at 11:30. We also have rhubarb, radishes, spinach, lettuce mix, fresh gourmet delight mushrooms, and popcorn. Now, I would ask for you to please tune in tonight to read about the strawberry season and my own thoughts about strawberries. #

June 9th- strawberry update

Good morning everyone. The boys and I were greeted with the delightful aroma of fresh strawberries this morning. Which means mom or dad were antsy and woke up extra early to pick about 20 quarts. These will be set out for purchase with the self self stand today at $7.50 a quart. We roll the self serve out around 9 and we also have radishes, spring mix, spinach, and rhubarb. Now our first strawberry picking, with pickers, will take place hopefully tomorrow morning, Lord willing. Watch for another post tomorrow to see when we will be opening and the amount that we picked.

June 5th- be there early

Well, first and foremost I would like to thank the Lord above for the gift of rain today. It was much appreciated and I am extremely hopeful that we get back into some kind of normal pattern the rest of the growing season. Now you all and Tiffany are going to find something out at the same time. 😆😆😆 Another one of my tinkering trials was ready to harvest this afternoon. Still some work to do so I am not going into specifics but this trial isn't going to be a monetary success. I tried and succeeded at growing early cauliflower but I probably lost over 60% of the plants do to the cold wet start to the spring. Our next cauliflower won't be ready for at least 3 to 4 weeks so if you want an early treat make sure to be at the West Bend Farmers Market early tomorrow.
