NEW WORLD SCREWWORM SITUATION UPDATE

The Sumter County Farmers Market continues to closely monitor developments regarding the recent detection of New World Screwworm (NWS) in Texas. While no cases have been reported in Florida, we recognize the potential impact this pest could have on the livestock industry and remain committed to protecting the health and welfare of livestock moving through our facility.

Our management team is maintaining communication with industry partners and monitoring updates from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), and other animal health authorities. We are reviewing all available guidance and stand ready to implement additional measures should the situation warrant further action.

At this time, livestock operations at Sumter County Farmers Market continue as normal. However, we encourage all producers, consignors, transporters, and buyers to remain vigilant by:

• Regularly inspecting livestock for wounds or unusual signs of irritation.
• Promptly reporting suspicious cases to a veterinarian or animal health official.
• Practicing good biosecurity measures when transporting or handling livestock.
• Monitoring official updates from USDA and FDACS.

The livestock industry has successfully overcome animal health challenges in the past through cooperation, communication, and proactive management.
