Okay, so not in the glow in the dark sense. Boy, that would be freaky, wouldn it? By glow, I mean it helps make your skin look positively glorious. Remember those free radicals we just talked about a minute ago? Well, they play a major role in making us age less gracefully. The antioxidants in fruit help combat that, while the water content hydrates our skin from the inside out. Beyond that, though, fruits with healthy fats, like avocados, can actually help prevent sun damage. Of course, you still need to wear sunscreen, but its always nice to have a little extra backup when it comes to fighting UV rays. Fruits rich in vitamin C are also great for your skin, as they help your body produce more collagen.

Different fruits and vegetables contain different nutrients. The Australian dietary guidelines recommend that adults eat at least five kinds of vegetable and two kinds of fruit every day. A national nutrition survey conducted by the Australian Government showed that Australians of all ages do not eat enough vegetables and fruit. Children have a smaller stomach capacity and higher energy needs than adults. They cannot eat the same serving sizes as adults. However, you should encourage your children to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. By eating well, your children will have the energy they need to play, concentrate better, learn, sleep better and build stronger teeth and bones. Building good habits in their early years can also provide the protection of a healthy diet throughout their lives. The Australian dietary guidelines have recommendations on how many vegetables and fruits adults, children and adolescents of different ages require.

What you eat can affect your brains overall health. A good diet can fight against memory loss and help keep you from becoming depressed or anxious. Our brains are made of Omega-3 fatty acids, which are one of the main building blocks of the brain. Omega-3 Fatty acids control normal brain function and help strengthen the neural connections our brains cell membranes have.4 Consuming foods with Omega-3 fatty acids can keep your brain sharp and reduce your risk of getting Alzheimer's. Foods such as salmon and tuna contain omega-3 fatty acids, as well as nuts and seeds.5 Another way food affects the brain's health is through serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical that is produced by our body's nerve cells and has an impact on our mood as well as our fine motor skills. Serotonin also affects our brain's ability to help our body get a good night's sleep, regulate depression, heal wounds, and digest foods. Because the body's serotonin levels are partly dependent on food, consuming foods such as milk, salmon, turkey, and spinach can help your brain tell the body to create more serotonin. This will help your body function properly, which will keep your brain healthy.6 While there is no one miracle food that protects your brain against aging, eating a well-balanced diet can help keep your brain healthy for years to come.

Sodium, carbonation, constipation, and excess air (due to eating too fast) can all lead to a bloated belly. A healthy diet that limits sodium and high-sugar carbonated drinks promotes a flatter stomach. High-fiber foods (such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains) reduce constipation. Slower eating not only makes you more mindful of what you are putting into your mouth, but it also reduces the excess air you swallow that leads to bloating.

Tips for Healthy Eating: Maintain healthy eating habits by avoiding foods, such as butter or fried foods, to help lower your cholesterol. Eliminate sugars by choosing water or tea over soda and high-sugar fruit juices. Frozen or canned fruits and vegetables provide nutrients while lowering blood pressure and cholesterol. Nuts and other high fiber foods help to lower cholesterol and keep you full, lowering your chances of overeating. Milk, cheese, yogurt, and non-dairy foods including broccoli, kale, and almonds provide a great source of calcium. Whole grain pasta, bread and cereal are better options than foods made with processed white flour. Fish, beans, peas and eggs are all great sources of protein. Pay attention to how you cook your food. It is best to avoid frying foods and to steam vegetables so that the nutrients are not lost. Benefits: Understanding the changes your body will make with age will help you appreciate why healthy shopping and eating habits are important. Every year after 40, your metabolism slows down, burning fewer calories. Eating healthy habits will help you avoid high cholesterol and weight gain, amongst other health risks.
