Queen's Garden

Queen's Garden We are a husband and wife team who love to grow all kinds of vegetables from spinach and lettuce to cucumbers and tomatoes. We are a chemical-free farm.

We take care of our soil by amending it with lots of organic material.

We’re always evaluating our garden, trying to figure out what we can do better. We decided to sell our greenhouse this fall. It was a dream of mine, but I realized it didn’t work as well as I’d hoped. With our new raised beds, we found the cold frame Blair built works much better. It protects the plants inside better because of its smaller size, and we can move it around as needed for crop rotation. Our goal is to have 3 cold frames (one for lettuce, spinach and cabbage).
Someone asked me why we do this-it’s just the 2 of us. We love having fresh vegetables as long as possible. We love knowing how our food is grown, and we love the quality of home grown.

I’m so thankful to have a handy husband who is willing to tackle my garden projects. We wanted to grow lettuce in a garden bed this winter. Blair designed this hinged cold frame to fit over our raised garden bed. I love having fresh salad in December!

One more project finished before winter-just before our first snow. Our new leaf bin is overflowing!

This fall we decided to plant the greenhouse with zucchini, cucumbers, cabbage and spinach (of course). I’ve been manually pollinating the blooms using a small paint brush. We had several cucumbers, but each one was bitter. I’m not sure if I planted the wrong variety, so I’ll try a different type next fall. The zucchini has been a huge success! My third zucchini was the best one yet! I’ve been covering the plant on cold nights, even though it’s inside the greenhouse. I know it won’t make it through really cold nights, but we’ve enjoyed being able to extend the season.

It was time to redo our leaf bin. Our old bin served its purpose, but it was falling down because the metal fence posts weren’t strong enough to take the pressure of the leaves. We upgraded the bin by using 4 x 6 posts. We repurposed the cedar boards from our old raised beds. We’re so happy with how it turned out and can’t wait to fill it up!

What started out as a need to replace our old cedar boards has changed into a total redesign of the garden. We opted to replace the decaying cedar boards with galvanized metal beds due to the cost of lumber, but we love the possibilities of the metal beds. We’ll be able to cover them easily to extend our growing season. We’re almost half finished replacing the old beds with the new ones.
