Day before (more) snow: thaw that organic chicken and soak those grits! Spring will come, and with it the promise of more fresh produce - juicy strawberries, snappy peas - but for now, we’re so grateful for the sweet storage crops and hearty grains keeping us nourished. And so grateful for you, our Daybreakers that understand eating local year round means supporting our farming community every flavorful season! ❄️ 🥕

Zoe and her team at .moth.herbs may have quieter days in the winter, but seeing her herbs and plants through to the final stages of drying and packaging keeps them busy. This time of year, they hand-garble last season’s herbs - this is a labor-intensive (and quite dusty!) process that involves passing herbs through different-sized screens to create the perfect cut for blending tea. Once garbled, each bath is carefully picked through by hand to remove any sticks or other debris not suitable for a cup of nourishing tea. In addition to processing the dried herbs, all liquid extracts including vinegars and alcohol-based tinctures are pressed in the winter.

🌷Looking ahead to spring, Zoe is excited for the first bulbs to bloom and fresh herbs to return - especially as her established perennials wake up and grow stronger each year! A favorite way to enjoy Luna Moth’s offerings? A splash of Elderberry Thyme Syrup in seltzer for a bright elderberry spritzer, or a hearty vegetable soup seasoned with a variety of their savory herbs.

✨Luna Moth Herbs currently available to add to your Daybreak Box: basil, chamomile, lemon balm, mullein, nettles, oregano, parsley, peppermint, sage, thyme, “deep breath tea blend” and “tulsi rose tea blend”✨

🍎 Wassail is a traditional spiced cider, gently simmered with fruit and warming spices—meant for sharing, celebrating, and staying cozy through the winter months! With another frigid forecast for the weekend ahead, it’s a good time to try making some! The version we like combines apples, apple cider, fresh orange and lemon juice, cinnamon sticks, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, and a touch of local sweetness: Kinney’s Sugarhouse maple syrup, or Swan’s honey. Enjoy it as-is for a comforting, family-friendly drink, or add a splash of brandy, rum, bourbon, or whiskey for a grown-up twist 🔥

We’re excited to highlight a Belfast-based, Asian- and woman-owned business crafting flavorful kimchi and spice blends using Maine-grown ingredients and traditional fermentation methods. If you missed it, they’re featured in our January newsletter—definitely worth a read: check your email inbox, or find all our past newsletter archived on our website @ about -> newsletters. 💌

When we asked what they love most about working with Daybreak, they shared: ✨✨✨
“Discovering amazing produce from local farms is one of the highlights of the job! We love connecting and being connected with Maine food businesses, building a local food ecosystem, and keeping money in our Maine community. All of our products have at least one (and usually more!) Maine-sourced ingredient year-round.”

We exist to support our farmers and feed our community. We believe in a community that takes care of each other, especially those in need.

What you may not be seeing on your feed is the stress being put on many of Maine’s food system leaders right now, who are making herculean efforts to feed vulnerable neighbors.

Feeding our neighbors is critical to ensure they can shelter safely. Community orgs are stepping in where state and federal resources have fallen short or are actively working against the best interests of the people.

This is the power of feeding our community. This is the silent work happening behind the visible chaos happening in the streets. This is how you can help.

Please learn about, fund and support our partners in Maine rising up to keep our neighbors fed and safe. Examples of those tagged below and we will keep you updated in our IG stories.

Please add in the comments those orgs you are witnessing stepping up and ensuring our neighbors in need are fed.

If you are a farm or food biz interested in how to donate food to the cause, DM us.
