National Food Waste Prevention Week is a good reminder that using what you buy can help your grocery budget go further.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are among the most commonly wasted foods.
Before you shop, check what you have, plan meals, and make a list. At home:
- Keep berries and leafy greens in the fridge; bananas and whole tomatoes on the counter.
- Store potatoes and onions separately in a cool, dark place. Keep apples and bananas away from leafy greens; the natural gas they release can speed ripening.
- Use ripe produce soon, freeze extras, or work them into another meal.
