Take good care of your logs and they will be heavy producers. These are very large 2022 logs which are fully colonized with shiitake mycelium. Note that mushrooms are pinnig all over the log, not only at the innoculation sites like a younger log.

If you can find the toad, we'll throw a $1 discount on your August 1st purchase of freshly harvested shiitakes at the market.

For those who "adopted" one of our 2025 shiitake logs, remember to be patient. I currently have 14 logs on the fruiting rack that I forced on Tuesday, July 22. Out of the 14, 10 pinned at least 2 mushrooms and many pinned over 10. I would like a better success rate, but the hot weather is not helping at all. So, be patient, keep forcing every 8 weeks, and more than likely, your log(s) will respond with a bountiful harvest!

We had an interesting question from a new customer asking about using treated municipal water on shiitake logs. The bottom line is that water treated with chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) or chloramine can negatively affect mycelium growth, especially in logs that are in their early years of mycelium colonization. If you rely on city water, contact your water department to determine which is used. If treated with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl ), you can let water stand for a day or two to "gas-off" the chlorine as it is relatively unstable in water. If treated with chloramine (NH₂Cl), a much more stable molecule, mitigation is more complex. Unless you have a catalytic activated carbon filtration system in your house which will remove the chloramine, your best bet is to use powdered ascorbic acid to neutralize the chloramine at a dose of 1000mg per 40 gallons of water. Alternatively, you can use Vitamin C tablets at the same rate but be aware that tablets do have other ingredients used as fillers and binders.
