A*o- oke fabric, (pronounced ah-Shaw-okay) is a hand loomed cloth woven by the Yoruba people of southwest Nigeria. A*o-Oke means top cloth in the English language. It is also the traditional wear of the Yorubas (the tribe of the southwest people in Nigeria, Africa). A*o Oke is traditionally worn on special occasions. There are also three main types of traditional A*o-Oke based on their colors: Alaari- a rich red type, Etu- a dark blue type, and Sanyan- could be light brown or a little dark brown.

Gele is the Yoruba word for (A woman’s) head wrap. In the Igbo culture it is called Ichafu. It is a large rectangular cloth tied on a woman’s head in a variety of fashions. The material used to make the gele is usually of a stiff, but flexible, and these materials come in a wide array of colors, patterns and textures.
Also Gele tying is an Art form that takes practice, patience and often times a well toned arm, a Gele can make any woman look regal.

This African Material is called “ Adire “
Adire textile is a resist-dyed cloth produced and worn primarily by the Yoruba people of southwestern Nigeria. The Yoruba label Adire ( meaning “tie and dye “) was first applied to indigo- dyed cloth decorated with resist patterns in the early twentieth century. By the second half of the twentieth century, broader colour palette of imported synthetic dyes was introduced. Adire then included a variety of hand dyed textiles using wax-resist batik methods to produce patterned cloth in a dazzling array of dye tints and hues. Nommaafrica loves African Clothing 😊
