The Surry County Farmers Market is closed for the 2024 season.

Surry County Tourism has developed a self-guided tour entitled “Farmers Feed the World” that will drive traffic to the growing number of local farm-based markets and farm stands. The tour is available on the Visit Surry County, VA app which is free and may be downloaded directly to users’ mobile devices.

With the increasing number of food access points throughout our community, with many open on Fridays, the current Friday evening farmers market is no longer sustainable. County staff encourages the community to support local farmers directly by visiting their farms and farm stands.

Tip Tuesday!!

Have you heard about giant hogw**d? This noxious w**d produces a sap that can cause burning and blistering if skin contact occurs in direct sunlight.

You should not attempt to control giant hogw**d yourself, and instead, should follow these steps if you believe you have spotted it:

1. Consult the Identification section above and the additional resources listed below for initial identification.

2. If you believe you have giant hogw**d, take pictures of identifying characteristics. Avoid contact with the plant. Send these pictures to your local extension agent.

3. If it is likely giant hogw**d, your local extension agent will collect and submit a physical sample to the Virginia W**d Identification Clinic for positive confirmation.

4. After positive confirmation, VDACS should be contacted immediately and will work collaboratively with the property owner to manage the plant(s). VDACS will handle reporting to USDA APHIS if necessary.
