Last year I said I would harvest the sweet potatoes earlier this year so they wouldn’t be so massive. I lied. We have another mammoth sized sweet potato year. 🤪🤷‍♀️

Sometimes the weeds get away from us and the only practical option is to lay plastic down to smother. It’s not my favorite option but it gets the job done and helps us reclaim beds that have gone a bit feral.

💦 Irrigation is one of those chores I hate setting up. I have about lost my mind more than once trying to attach a compression fitting, but the pay off is so worth it. Especially when trying to germinate 🥕 carrot seed in the hottest part of summer. We use drip tape and misters in the greenhouse but for most field things I really like wobblers. They can be reused several years and if spaced properly, do a great job of water the whole plot. The downside is you want to use them during non windy parts of the day or there is wasted watering due to drift.

This is the time of year that growing becomes hard. Weeds are growing at what seems to be double time, fall gardens need to be put in and the harvest days are long, hot and hard to keep up with. Gardening posts are usually less frequent for farmers not because they are disingenuous but there just isn’t any bandwidth left for posting. But I think it’s important to show because the truth is farming is hard work and sometimes overwhelming. I will be spending the next few days processing these veggies down into freezers and jars while the weeds grow taller and the to do list piles high but I am so grateful to be living off the land and to have these opportunities to teach my children how to work hard and garden.

Garden tomatoes absolutely ruin you on grocery store ones. Tomatoes also tend to be one of the most needy garden crops. Lots of pruning, trellising, soil amending and pest management. I’m pretty sure that if gardening was a gang the initiation would be growing a perfect tomato. I’m especially pleased with these Golden Jubilees this year-so yummy and pretty.😋

Did you know there’s an entire French🇫🇷 military marching song dedicated to the onion? 🧅 me either until now😂 but after all the work it takes to grow, harvest and cure them I can see why they would be revered.

It’s been a hot week🥵 but we should have enough onions and potatoes to last awhile.🤪 Usually we have grown Walla Walla sweet onions but this year we went with the Pattersons. They sized up nicely and are renowned for their storability. The Kennebec potatoes 🥔were a bit of a disappointment. We were grateful to get two wheelbarrow loads but there was an entire 30% that got eaten by wireworms and developed soft rot-There’s nothing worse than sticking your hand into a squishy, stinky rotten potato while harvesting.🤢

🧅Le Chant L’Oignon (The Onion Song) lyrics🎶
I like the onion fried in oil,
I like the onion when it is good,
I like the onion fried in oil,
I love the onion, I love the onion.

At walk comrades, at walk comrades,
At walk, at walk, at walk.
At walk comrades, at walk comrades,
At walk, at walk, at walk.

The herb garden has really been cranking out the chamomile. The first year I mistakenly grew Roman chamomile and it tasted incredibly bitter. Now I just grow German chamomile and it’s the perfect tea to wind down from the day. I will hang this basket up in my house and let it dry out for a couple weeks (giving it a toss occasionally for even drying) and then transfer to a jar once completely dry.

It won’t be long before we are harvesting and curing potatoes and onions! 🥳🧅 🥔 This is our first year growing romanesco and I’m a little worried that there’s no heading yet. The Cauliflower is really starting to size up and most of the kohlrabi has been harvested.

Though I’ve dabbled in the past, I’ve really been trying to get better with relay cropping. We recently planted watermelon seeds in with the mustard greens. The mustard greens will be pulled out here within the next week and the watermelon plants will have room to take off. Keeping as many roots in the soil as possible gives soil organisms food to feed on. Healthy soil is the foundation to a healthy garden. 💪
