We fish. We farm. And it all starts with the larval drift.

Scallop spawning season is here in Penobscot Bay, and we’re preparing 300 habitat traps to collect wild scallop larvae during their roughly 38-day larval drift through the upper water column.

Instead of letting those tiny larvae eventually settle to the seafloor and potentially become fish food 🐟😂, we’re fishing for them using vertically suspended habitat traps.

Once collected, the larvae remain protected in the traps for about 2–3 months before we sort them and move the growing scallops into our suspended condos.

And here’s one of our favorite parts: our scallops never touch the bottom. From habitat trap to harvest, they stay suspended in the clean waters of Penobscot Bay, which means beautiful, completely mud-free scallops. 🙌

We’re hoping these 300 traps will give us a strong natural stock to grow for the seasons ahead.

This is what sustainable aquaculture looks like at Pen Bay: fishing, farming, stewardship, and working with the natural lifecycle of the bay. 🌊🦪

I have to wonder if this is going to be the fate of Maine’s inshore scallop fishery or are we going to figure out how to make more scallops?

The scallop season opened today (1 September), but note that many of New Zealand’s main scallop fisheries remain closed.

Before you go fishing make sure you check the rules for your area, so you catch a feed not a fine.

The Northland, Hauraki Gulf, Coromandel and western Bay of Plenty scallop fisheries have been fully closed to recreational and commercial fishing since 2022. The Kaipara harbour fishery has been closed since 2018, and the Nelson/Marlborough fishery has been closed since 2017.

Download the free NZ Fishing Rules app (https://www.mpi.govt.nz/rules). It has the latest information about the fishing rules, including size and bag limits, and closures and restrictions (including maps).

Please report any suspected illegal fishing activity to 0800 4 POACHER (0800 47 62 24) or email [email protected]
