HASTA BEE HONEY

HASTA BEE HONEY John Russell here starting a page about our APIARY and its success/failures. I'll be sharing this info and more. Keep an eye out!

I started beekeeping April of 2022 and can't believe the things I've learned about these fascinating creatures and more.

Got a small swarm from the same person I got one from last year and it was a God send to get it. The colony from last year was queenless. Not anymore. Thanks again Keani Balaban for saving us/me once again.

A question from anonymous

What hazards and risks are often ignored or underestimated in beekeeping? ๐Ÿ

๐Ÿ Many people think the biggest danger in beekeeping is getting stungโ€ฆ

But the truth is, some of the most serious risks in beekeeping are the ones we ignore every day.

A beekeeper can carry heavy honey boxes for years and slowly damage their back without realizing it. Others work for hours under hot sun wearing thick suits until dehydration and heat stress become normal. Some become too confident around bees and stop wearing protective gear, only to face dangerous attacks later.

Even experienced beekeepers sometimes underestimate:
๐Ÿ Fire risks from smokers
๐Ÿ Chemical exposure from hive treatments
๐Ÿ Aggressive colonies
๐Ÿ Disease spread between hives
๐Ÿ Mental and financial burnout

Another hidden danger is poor apiary placement. Hives placed too close to homes, schools, or pathways can create serious conflicts between bees, people, and animals.

And one important thing many people donโ€™t know:
A person can develop severe allergic reactions to bee stings even after years of beekeeping safely.

Beekeeping is beautiful, but it is not something to approach carelessly.

Good beekeeping is not only about harvesting honey.
It is about safety, responsibility, patience, and respect for both bees and human life.

The best beekeeper is not the one with the most coloniesโ€ฆ
but the one who manages them wisely and safely. ๐Ÿ

They've sucked down 3 of those bottles in a week losing only one bee after adding the sponge. Now I feed through the entrance as opposed to opening the hive every time to add food. Yayyyyy, yeah!

Alright Alright Alright! I just picked up a new customer for my honey. Believe it or not it's a mechanic shop.

Let me just say that if you need a good mechanic go see Steve's Auto Service in Alton New York. And no, I'm not just saying that because he's buying our honey. I've been using them for nearly 30 years.

Now he's my customer๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Read it, it's crazy!

A Kansas family accidentally shared their home with an army of brown recluses.

The strange part is not how many spiders were there. It is how little happened.

Researchers collected 2,055 brown recluse spiders from one Lenexa, Kansas home over six months, including hundreds large enough to deliver venom.

That sounds like the opening scene of a real estate lawsuit with legs.

But four people had already been living there for years.

They saw the spiders often. They slept, dressed, cooked, and moved through the same rooms.

Still, not one confirmed bite.

That does not make brown recluses harmless. Their venom can cause serious wounds, and nobody should treat an infestation like a quirky roommate situation.

But the name โ€œrecluseโ€ is doing real work here.

These spiders are not tiny assassins looking for ankles. They usually hide, avoid conflict, and bite only when trapped against skin.

The scarier lesson is how often fear fills in the blanks.

Sometimes the monster in the wall is real, but the story around it is bigger than the bite.
