Mack Family Farm We’re a first-generation, starting from scratch, small family farm. How will the transition go?

Established in 2023 in Bulloch county, GA, and grew wildly until Summer of 2026 when we moved to Denton county, TX.

The harvest is looking GOOD Y’all!

What a blessing!
Two weeks after that picture was taken of the baby sweet potato plants, we left for Texas.

We left them hooked up to drip irrigation on a timer connected to our well. Literally the day we drove off for Texas we were delayed by 5 hours due in part to a problem with the well that Farmer Mack had to fix.

8 weeks later Farmer Mack and #1 Farm helper headed back to GA (for that ortho appointment, to check on the sweet potatoes and to bring another load to Texas—this time including a handful of our trees). At their visit, they found the sweet potatoes doing well despite the well’s pump failing and the Boro being in a severe drought.

Yesterday afternoon the boys got to work! Can you believe what those baby plants turned into!?! Despite a visitor (or more) penetrating the fence.

First step is to mow the vines. Then rake them into a pile. Trust me, this is the hardest raking job ever. Can you believe these bales of sweet potato vines?!

Then Farmer Mack mostly, but he bought a 2nd pitch fork for this weekend, hand digs. Not just the row, but also the aisles. Sweet potatoes spread.

I’ve dug a handful of sweet potatoes in the past, but I dig at about 10% of Farmer Mack’s speed. Maybe 5%. It’s his super power!

Yesterday they got 1.5 rows done in half a day! 4.5 more rows to go.

Hiya!

It’s about time y’all heard from me. And I have a story to tell…

Back in early March when I finally got the courage up to tell Bulloch County School Nutrition Services about our moving plans, I also had lined up another farmer in Bulloch County to take over our sweet potato production.

To ease the blow.

Unfortunately, those farmers ended up not planting sweet potatoes this year. They were already overwhelmed with other produce they’d started diversifying with. Which we completely understand! But we were also disappointed and sad for Bulloch County.

Amidst getting our house ready to sell, our farm ready to walk away from and 15 years of living to sort through and pack, while also still going to the Farmers market almost every weekend…Farmer Mack ordered 1,000+ sweet potato plugs!! 🤦🏼‍♀️

And, we got them planted.

In combination with flying back to GA for #1 Farm Helper’s last few orthodontic appointments, the sweet potatoes were checked on in September ✅

And this weekend they’re being harvested! Time being our biggest constraint.

In 2 weeks, I will fly back to sort, pack and deliver. And Bulloch County (and maybe a few others) will get to enjoy Mack Family Farm’s locally grown, GA sweet potatoes for Thanksgiving lunch one more time.

Okay, my phone is struggling. I finally broke down and bought a new one, when it gets here I hope to be more consistent. I didn’t intend to just drop Mack Family Farm, but to continue and expand the journey…

For now, enjoy this recipe, a family favorite that is so good, I haven’t changed a thing! Sometimes I substitute summer squash for zucchini, sometimes I am too lazy to add any. Like tonight. And if you’re one of those cool people that picked up a bottle of our strawberry infused balsamic vinegar, might I suggest substituting that for the balsamic reduction. Yum!

What am I doing with all my extra time?

Remember that wheat we grew right there in Bulloch County Georgia? Ancient Sonoran wheat, the oldest surviving heritage wheat variety in North America?

After Farmer Mack grew it, middle Mack harvested it and #1 Farm helper thrashed it (more or less) and we moved it with us to Texas…it still needed some clean up.

Lots of trial and error lead to not much progress and a variety of bins of partially cleaned up piles of wheat berries just taking up space. There they sat for awhile, until today!

4.5 hours later…. all wheat has been cleaned, hand picked through. Some of it ground up in my mill and some stored in mason jars to be ground later.

Couldn’t help thinking as I spent about 4 times longer on this project than I expected today, that this poor wheat likely would have sat for years before we ever got to it.

Excited to create some extra yummy stuff with this hard earned wheat flour!

Now excuse me while I go thank every miller in the country and the men who keep those mills running! If we had to rely on hand cleaned wheat, I’m certain we would starve or never be able to afford it!

Well, the kids go back to school tomorrow, exactly like they would be doing in Georgia.

I have no farm to tend and all my kids in school. 🤯 What on earth will I do?

I’ve got plenty of ideas, and near the top of that list is getting back to some promises I made to y’all, starting with a certain Fig Newton recipe (before Fig season ends!). Stay tuned!

Maybe the wound is still too fresh. But Farmer Mack and I are galavanting around an Asian Market today in Plano, TX.

The produce section is hurting our hearts a bit and getting us really excited as we survey SO many types of produce we grow/grew for y’all right in Bulloch County.

I’m getting a better understanding of the depth of the variety we offered.

Is our local grocery store in Texas trying to show my peppers up?!?Or will there really be a raid on Hatch Peppers soon?...

Hey y’all!

We made it to Texas! 😮‍💨

And to celebrate our 6th day here what did we do? We went and checked out a local farmers market in Denton. 😊

We are so spoiled in the Boro y’all. We have such a nice facility. I know lots of vendors do tents there every week, but I sure enjoyed not having a set up a tent in addition to everything else. Here, it’s just a big sea of tents!

I found the sweetest farm vendor whose Mom does all the growing. They had yellow watermelons! She knew the name of the variety, Desert Sand. ❤️ They had Indian Snake cucumbers! She was very surprised we knew of them. We of course supported her by buying a yellow watermelon!

Then she told us of their farm friends whose cantaloupe crop was wiped out by hail, yesterday! So we went over there (I couldn’t buy any potatoes or onions, we have plenty of our own) and the only other produce he had was watermelons. He had Charleston Gray (which we would grow). He had one that bugs had tried to get into, but we know better and we still bought it at the discounted price he set.
