The drone mates with the queen so she can lay eggs, which is her major job. She must lay many, so the hive can keep going and be strong enough to control their natural predators like the mite or the hive beetle. She also controls the temperament of the hive. The worker...well, works. There are may jobs that the workers take on -- field bee, guard bee, nurse bee, scouter bee. They work so hard, they work themselves to death. The workers only live about 6 weeks. The queen can live for a couple of years.

Know your honey bees…

Worker bees are female. They gather nectar and pollen, clean the hive and care for the brood (bee larva). They also tend to the queen by guarding the hive, and turning nectar into honey.

The queen remains in the hive to lay eggs and regulate worker activities with pheromones.

The drones mate with a virgin queen on her nuptial flight and then die immediately. They are only present during spring and summer.
