Homemade tallow sunscreen
Going to Hershey park, we knew we'd be in direct sunlight for several hours. So I wanted to put sunscreen on the kids, but I've avoided over the counter sunscreen for years, knowing that in itself that can be cancer causing.
I've been using tallow on my skin for months now and I've seen advertisements for tallow sunscreen. I thought if I make tallow lotion how much harder would tallow sunscreen be to make? So I've researched it and put together this recipe for you. It's super easy!
So if you don't trust over the counter sunscreen, give this one a try, and it's great for your skin as well!
You will need a sauce pan and a one quart mason jar, spoon for stirring and glass or metal jars/ tins to put the sunscreen in.
You will also need (I recommend organic if able)
1/2 c. Beeswax, if using a block, shave it into pieces or purchase beeswax pellets. Make sure it's REAL beewax
1 c. Non-nano zinc oxide powder non-nano is important because the particles are larger and won't go through your skin
1/2 c. Tallow
2/3 c. Olive oil (I use extra virgin)
1/2 c. Coconut oil
1/2 tsp. Of essential oils or extract for fragrance (optional)
Add all ingredients to mason jar except essential oils or extract. Fill sauce pan with water. Make sure water level is high but at least an inch or two below lip of mason jar, it's important that water doesn't get into the mason jar.
* Put jar into sauce pan before turning on burner. You don't want to add mason jar to hot water, it can Crack jar.
Heat on high, once its boiling you can turn heat down to medium. Stir ingredients often. Let it simmer until all the ingredients are throughly melted. Pull off heat then add you choice of essential oils/ extract. Stir very well, then carefully pour into glass or tin containers, only use vessels that can withstand heat.
Let it cool well before adding lids.
