In today’s photo, David from our Nob Hill produce team is showing off two stunning garlic braids that are as flavorful as they are beautiful.

Garlic is one of those simple ingredients that can completely transform a meal — adding depth to soups, sauces, roasted vegetables, marinades, homemade dressings, pasta dishes, and summer grilling recipes. And when it’s thoughtfully grown, you can truly taste the difference.

That’s one reason we’re excited to carry garlic from Allicin's Ranch. Their farms are located hundreds of miles away from major industry and pollution, with rich soil that has long been cared for using organic practices.

Their garlic is grown with artesian well water from protected mountain ranges and nourished using natural fertilizers like seaweed, kelp, and pasture-based compost.

Much of the farming work is done by hand, with a strong focus on sustainability, soil stewardship, and producing truly exceptional garlic.

What we especially appreciate is that Allicins Ranch believes farming is about more than food. They dedicate time to educating young farmers through internship programs focused on organic and sustainable agriculture, helping inspire the next generation of growers and land stewards.

Their work also supports a small rural mountain village involved in growing, harvesting, cleaning, and braiding the garlic by hand — creating a fair-trade style partnership that directly benefits the local community.

It’s exactly the kind of thoughtful agriculture we love connecting with our community here at La Montañita Food Co-op in Albuquerque.

If you’re looking for a new way to enjoy this garlic, try this easy seasonal recipe:

🧄 Roasted Garlic & New Mexico Honey Butter Beans

• Roast several garlic cloves in olive oil until soft and caramelized
• Toss warm butter beans with the roasted garlic, olive oil, lemon zest, chopped parsley, and a drizzle of New Mexico honey
• Finish with cracked black pepper and serve with toasted bread or grilled vegetables

It’s rich, savory, slightly sweet, and perfect for summer meals.

When you visit our Nob Hill grocery store, be sure to explore all the seasonal specials and local organic produce arriving from farms across New Mexico and beyond. And don’t hesitate to ask our produce team for recipe ideas, cooking tips, or recommendations on what’s freshest right now.

We’re always happy to help you discover something delicious. 💚

The mystery food was... Organic Horseradish!

This time around, we stumped everyone! Despite some creative guesses, nobody was able to correctly identify this week's challenge. Don't worry—we'll have plenty more chances to test your food knowledge in future rounds. Better luck next time! 💚

Horseradish may not be the first ingredient that comes to mind when you think of everyday produce, but this humble root has a long history and a flavor that's impossible to forget. Part of the brassica family, which includes mustard, cabbage, and broccoli, horseradish is known for its sharp, peppery bite.

Interestingly, the root doesn't have much aroma until it's cut or grated. Once broken open, natural compounds are released that create the bold heat horseradish is famous for.

While many people know horseradish as a condiment served alongside roast beef or mixed into cocktail sauce, fresh horseradish can be used in a variety of ways.

It adds a flavorful kick to mashed potatoes, salad dressings, dips, grain bowls, roasted vegetables, sandwiches, and even homemade sauces. A little goes a long way!

Looking for a delicious way to use fresh horseradish at home? Try this simple recipe:

✨ Creamy Horseradish Sauce ✨

Ingredients:
• 2 tablespoons freshly grated organic horseradish
• ½ cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt
• 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
• Pinch of sea salt
• Fresh cracked black pepper to taste

Directions:

1. Grate the horseradish root using a fine grater.
2. Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and mix well.
3. Let the sauce rest in the refrigerator for 15–30 minutes to allow the flavors to come together.
4. Serve with roasted vegetables, baked potatoes, sandwiches, burgers, grain bowls, or your favorite protein.

The result is creamy, tangy, and packed with fresh horseradish flavor.

Thank you to everyone who participated and shared your guesses. One of our favorite parts of is introducing unique ingredients, sparking curiosity, and celebrating the incredible variety of foods available through our co-op.

Whether you guessed correctly or not, we hope you learned something new and discovered an ingredient you might be inspired to try.

Keep an eye out for the next challenge coming soon. Maybe the next mystery food will be a little easier... or maybe not. 😉🌿💚

Co-op community — we want to take a moment to address the recent parking changes at our Nob Hill location and share an update with everyone. 💚

First and foremost, thank you to everyone who has reached out, shared concerns, asked questions, and continued showing up for our co-op during this transition. We know these changes have been frustrating and disappointing for many longtime shoppers, neighbors, and community members.

We’ve heard your feedback clearly, and we understand how much accessibility and convenience matter when it comes to everyday grocery shopping in Nob Hill.

Over the past several weeks, our team has been in conversations with the property owners to advocate for our customers and help make shopping at La Montañita more accessible.

We’re grateful we were able to secure free daily parking from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Nob Hill lot.

(While updated signage is still being installed in the coming weeks, the parking areas are currently not being actively monitored during those morning hours.)

In addition, after 11 a.m., shoppers can still receive one free hour of parking by using the QR code posted in the lot.

We know this does not completely eliminate the concerns many people have expressed, but we hope it helps make visiting the co-op easier — especially for morning shoppers, quick grocery trips, coffee runs, and community members stopping in for breakfast, lunch, or fresh local groceries.

For nearly 50 years, La Montañita has been part of the Nob Hill community. We’ve always believed a grocery store can be more than just a place to shop. It can be a place where neighbors connect, where local farmers and producers are supported, where healthy food is accessible, and where community matters. That mission has not changed.

Our team remains committed to helping customers navigate the parking process and making everyone feel welcome when they walk through our doors. If you have questions while visiting the store, please don’t hesitate to ask one of our staff members for help.

Whether you come to La Montañita for local produce, organic groceries, wellness products, fresh baked goods, grab-and-go meals, or simply to support local business in Albuquerque, we want you to know how much your support means to us.

Thank you for continuing to support community-owned business, local food systems, and your neighborhood co-op here in Nob Hill. We truly appreciate this community and look forward to continuing to serve you.

What is a co-op?

A co-op, short for cooperative, is a business owned by the community it serves. Instead of being controlled by outside shareholders or a large corporation, a co-op is built around people coming together to support something they believe in.

At La Montañita Food Co-op, our members help support a grocery store focused on fresh local food, organic products, sustainability, and strengthening our local economy. 🌻

This year, we’re celebrating 50 years of community ownership, and we’re proud to continue growing alongside the people and communities who helped build the Co-op from the very beginning.

One thing many people don’t realize is that anyone can shop at La Montañita Food Co-op. Membership is not required to walk through our doors and enjoy everything we offer. Everyone is welcome.

Our stores are filled with fresh produce, local New Mexico products, bulk foods, wellness items, prepared foods, and organic groceries carefully selected with our community in mind. When you shop at the Co-op, you’re also helping support local farmers, ranchers, makers, and small businesses throughout the region.

For those who choose to become members, membership is a way to take a deeper role in supporting the Co-op’s mission. Members help own the store alongside their neighbors, receive additional discounts, and invest in a business model centered around people, not profits alone.

For five decades, La Montañita Food Co-op has believed food can do more than fill carts — it can connect communities, support local agriculture, and create positive change.

With 4 locations across New Mexico, we’re honored to continue that work together.

Come see what good food can do. 💛
