There isn’t much that is funnier than listening to a baby rooster learn to crow. 😂😂

Some of our chicks have grown up to be some interesting looking chickens. The frizzle was one of the first boys to start crowing - and definitely the funkiest looking chicken.

We have one cockerel that is very unique - completely black comb and wattle with iridescent black and gold feathers.

Then there is the trio of silkies (or silkie mixes). They are cute but dumb as dirt.

The last 2 are what the majority of the hatched chicks grew up to be. It’s interesting to see how their colors change!

Kicked off the experiment to get bees to build honey comb inside the jars! Built a frame out of scrap plywood. That frame fits inside a super box and the jars sit in it upside down. I put a starter strip of wax at the bottom of the jars to help the bees out! This box is going on one of my strongest hives. Honey flow is on here, so we will see what happens!

I’m trying an experiment this year (these are not my pictures… yet). This is going to be fun!! Let’s see if my bees will build natural comb inside a jar! Once they have built comb, filled with honey and capped I’d fill the rest of the jar with honey! Honey and comb in a jar!!

16oz jar with just honey in it usually sells for $20. What do you think I should price a 16oz jar with honey AND comb built in the jar???

Things I never fathomed until we started a mini-farm #658 -

How much hardware cloth we would use… no, one of roll was not enough

The fancy littles aren’t so little anymore! Patricia is a silkie mix with a fabulous salt and pepper bouffant hairstyle. Unfortunately she couldn’t see… like at all, so we had to trim her bangs a little.

Yet-to-be-named black silkie is a true silkie with fluffy feathers and all. She definitely needs a name!

Electra is a frizzle whose feathers are still coming in… more and more every day she looks like she stuck her beak in an outlet! That’s one weird, but fabulous looking chicken!

Finally we have Rock Star Hair! A black and gold polish chicken with a top know that says “This chicken parties!” (Or tries to get out every time we open the brooder)

These ladies along with some others will join the flock in the next week or so when they graduate to the chick pen in the big coop. Even more exciting is that the bigger chicks are about to join gen pop!

Well that was and adventure tonight. I set out one of my swarm traps on Saturday. I’ve been seeing bees come in and out for the last few days. When I drove into my driveway today - this is what I found!!! A SWARM!!

Didn’t seem like they were going inside. My swarm lure spray may have been too strong. So I scooped them and put them into a box. Kept looking at the swarm trap and there was a little ball of bees that didn’t want to leave. Looking in that…. THE QUEEN! Got her in a queen clip and put her in the hive.

I’ll go check early early tomorrow morning and move the hive to the bee yard.

I’m still learning about swarm catching. I have no idea if those were my bees that split and swarmed. I’ll check that this weekend. I guess we will see what happens!

Question to the community - I had some friends come suit up, dive into the hives, and teach them about bees.

Is that something anyone in the community would be interested in as a hands on one-on-one or small group class?

I loved teaching and sharing my experiences! They told me that leans a lot and had fun too.
