9th West Farmers Market

9th West Farmers Market West Side's own seasonal weekly market where you can find local goods, entrepreneurship, diversity. Held on Sundays Starting mid June to Mid October

We have heard from many people that they want to try to keep the market going. Though we wish it could, the market has run its course. We are proud of all that we have accomplished, and all that we have done first, paving the way for other markets in Utah, whether they knew it or not. That is something we are proud of and we have no regrets. But unlike years past, the decision is final. We are not going to change the decision.

In looking back, we can be proud of being the first farmers market in Utah to accept food stamp benefits. We had the first program to double the food stamp benefits (prior to the current Double Up Food Buck program). We were the first Sunday farmers market in Salt Lake County. There have been many programs at the market to include youth vendors, backyard gardeners, and more as vendors. We can tell you where all the produce at our market comes from, and it is from Utah (we have 4 small farms and 3 backyard gardeners we have bring produce to the market). We were the only farmers market in Salt Lake County to have the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile in 2024 (that was a lot of fun). We were the only farmers market who signed up to do the free sack lunch program with the Utah Food Bank. And we survived the pandemic with only 5 of us handling everything. That was a miracle.

Come, have fun with us. We want 2026 to be spectacular. Going out in style. Here are some of the things we have planned.

June 14th Opening Day Birthday/Anniversary party. Free kid activities, refreshments, meet and greet our vendors, have fun. We will be doing yard sale days every other weekend, starting opening day. Kids will be able to plant a seedling in a repurposed "pot" (if you have any chipped or cracked mugs/cups you want to donate to become repurposed "pots", let us know).

July 12th Pet Day. Mel's favorite event of the season. (No one is allowed to check her vehicle when she leaves for home at the end of the day. If you are part of an animal rescue group, animal local business or service, contact Cagney at [email protected] or text 385-242-9466.

August 2nd Health and Safety Day. We are working on having everything from law enforcement, fire department, Salt Lake County Health Department, and more be involved. Our very own Mel (former SLCPD Crime Lab Tech) is going to be on hand to do safety fingerprint cards for kids. If you are interested in participating in the event, contact Mel at [email protected] or text (801) 699-6641.

Sept 13th Book Day. We will have local authors reading excerpts from books that they have written, as well as some will have copies of books they have written. There will be a free book exchange, so if you have books you want to donate, bring them over. Whatever are left at the end of the day, we have places to drop them off, including at the VA. If you wish to participate, contact Nan Weber at [email protected] or Mel at [email protected]

Oct 11th Our final day. We will finish the market as we use to, with kids having an early Halloween event. There will be trick or treating at each booth, and more.

So plan on a full season coming to the market. And yes, we have heard from Larry. He said it is going to be a limited year, there is not going to be water (no shock). We will keep you updated as we know more.

Hi everyone. Have some updates for the season.
We applied for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, but due to federal cuts in funding, we were not added to the program.

This season, the SunBucks program which assisted families with children who qualitied have extra funds during the summer for the kids to feed them while school was out, has been cut in Utah.

Our pilot program being part of the Utah Food Bank last year with their sack lunch for kids was small, so we don't qualify for the program this year. But, the moms that we are, Judy, Karen, and Mel didn't like that idea. We want to ensure kids who come to the market have something to eat. Our plan is to purchase sealed meals from the store each weekend to have at the market, for children, ages 16 and under. No questions asked, no income requirements, any child that comes to the market that wants one of the meals, they will receive one of the meals.

The food security of our community is important, especially in our youth. With programs such as WIC being limited, and SunBucks and more losing vital funding that see to nutrition for our children, we find it vital to see the kids watched over.

As such, we will be accepting donations to aid in providing the meals for the kids. Financial donations or even items you might have to put on the yard sale weekends which the proceeds would go towards the program. Due to limitations on hauling items and (wo)man power, we cannot handle large items, such as large furniture.

Help us ensure the kids of our community have something to eat on Sundays this summer and autumn. We want to see that our neighbors are not suffering when we can do something about it.

Are you preparing for spring cleaning? If so, if you have chipped or cracked mugs/tea cups, small bowls, or other such items, we are planning to do a project for the kids on opening day. We are planning to have seedlings for the kids to transplant into the cups or bowls to keep the plants growing. The plants are food producing, such as tomato, pepper, herb, or others. Let us know and "kill" two birds with one stone... spring clean and help us give the kids something to grow.

We have a crazy and fun idea. Most of us who do crafts can agree that we have items sitting on a shelf or in a box in a closet that we will never use. We want to give these items new life. If you have items you want to donate, bring them to the market. Kid craft stuff and adult craft stuff. We will then have it available to those who come to the market for free to take home. We will bag up stuff for people. Call it rehoming crafts.

Hi everyone. We have some news for everyone.

First off, this year makes our 20th anniversary. Our market has had a lot to be proud of, the first to offer food stamp benefit usage, free kids sack lunches, and more. We survived the pandemic and more. Over 20 years, we have seen so many amazing people come through, though sadly lost many of the market "family". We plan to make this season a fun one, filled with good times.

Now for the second announcement. After considerable thought, the board has come to the conclusion that this will be the final season. Due to severe health issues, lack of assistance, and other issues, it is time to call it the end. We decided to finish out the 20th anniversary, and go out with a bang. If anyone would like to come do things like read to kids once a month or do a free kids craft, get in touch with us. If you want to help us with some special events we plant, let us know (pet day, book day, and others we will announce later). Let's go out being one of the best years possible.

This coming Sunday is the final 9th West Farmers Market for 2025. We will have pumpkins, many varieties of winter squash (acorn, butternut, spaghetti, hubbard, banana), tomatoes, apples, hopefully peaches, and more.

We will have items from (Salsitas) Salsas de Mendoza and Momma Mendoza’s casera goods (baked goods). Chips, salsas, taco sauce, enchilada sauce, fresh pico de gallo, fresh pico with mango, and fresh guacamole. Baked goods will be fresh baked honey white bread, french bread, cinnamon rolls, strawberry cheesecake cookies, s'mores cookies, chocolate or vanilla conchas, conchas with nutella, and pecan shortbread cookies.

Also, we will have Millcreek Olive Oil oils and balsamic vinegars.

There will be other vendors with a multitude of fabulous items which would make great gifts for the upcoming holiday season. Jewelry, crocheted items, candles, and more.

This last week, we had some nice news at the market. We have been a part of a free kids sack lunch program. It ended a few weeks past. Those running the program had told me they would come get the leftover cases. I have been busy and forgot to call them to see when, and they forgot to come. So Karen Williams took the remaining cases to return. The people had already closed up the counts and inventory and couldn't go back in to change the reports, so we were given permission to hand them out. Break our hearts.

We have had a sweet couple with a 2 & 1/2 year old daughter who is adorable and definitely lives up to the age in determination. They had been coming for weeks, and the little one has loved the meals (including voicing how much she loves the chocolate milk). They have become one of our backyard gardeners, bringing what they have extra from their garden to trade for stuff they dont have in garden. It has been fun to deal with them.

Karen, Judy, and Mel all knew what we would do. We could tell the family was struggling from things we had accidentally overheard. We have all been there struggling when we didn't have enough money to pay the bills and put food on the table. So determinated, we made a goal.

The father came yesterday, with their box of squashes, eggplant, and heirloom tomatoes. Mel ask him, as usual, how much they wanted for their produce, so we know how much trade we do. We asked him to come behind the market table. We explained the deal with the lunches and asked how many he would like for the week. He said he wouldn't want to take away from others. We said that we have enough to spread them around. He was overwhelmed when we loaded up the box with the meals, chocolate milk, a loaf of bread, peaches, corn, and some other items. Then we handed him the money he had valued his produce. The three of us explained how we had had difficulties over the years and we all have fallen in love with their adorable family. The dad was choked up, looking down at his feet, near to cry. Anyone who knows us can probably guess that we hugged him, and told him that his family were the sort of people we have fought to keep the market alive. We aren't paid, and we dont run the market just to make money. We do it to aid those in our community be able to get produce, other food products that are local, and our artisans. Most of us are friends (more appropriately, family by heart) all year round.

As we have come to say, our market is more than just a farmers market.

Much love everyone. Just had to share an awesome event, and hope it helps warms your hearts. Take a moment to share a smile or a hello with a stranger. It can make a huge difference in someone's life.
