Adopt a Farmer

Adopt a Farmer Connecting middle school students with farmers to learn where their food and fiber come from through dialogue, farm field trips and classroom visits.
(1)

Pairing a middle school classroom with a farm or ranch for the entire academic year gives students the chance to see, hear, touch, smell and taste what life is like on the farm. The Agri-Business Council of Oregon funds a field trip and coordinates 2-3 classroom visits through the year to engage students in the science behind farming, while the farmer shares his or her story of Oregon agriculture.

In a day and age where people forget that milk comes from cows and fruits and vegetables don’t grow at the grocery story, it’s more important than ever to engage Oregonians about where their food and fiber come from.

What a FABULOUS day for the 6th graders from Coburg Community Charter School at Stahlbush Island Farms!

Students got a behind-the-scenes look at modern agriculture, touring the processing plant, learning about the farm’s biogas generator, and watching organic green beans being planted in the field. They even got their hands dirty planting squash starts and enjoyed tasting fresh blueberries, corn, and green pea purée grown right on the farm!

Farm Manager Josh shared how Stahlbush manages its organic crops, demonstrated how planting equipment works, and explained how GPS technology helps guide planting and crop management throughout the growing season.

The day wrapped up with a cupcake decorating contest featuring cupcakes made by Chelsea from Stahlbush’s marketing team using the farm’s pumpkin purée—a delicious way to end an unforgettable visit!

Thank you to the entire Stahlbush Island Farms team for providing such a fun, educational, and hands-on agricultural experience for these students!

Harrisburg Middle School’s 6th grade Ag class had a FANTASTIC field trip to Boshart Trucking last week! 🚛🌾 They spent the morning learning all about custom baling, straw export, trucking, grass seed, and hazelnuts with Farmer Eric and Stan from Boshart Trucking.

Students watched straw bales being loaded onto a truck that is headed all the way to Lynden, Washington, explored different seed types and sizes, and compared parts from an F-150 and a semi truck to see just how different they are. They also learned how hazelnuts are grown, harvested, and propagated — and even got to guess the weight of the entire class using the truck scale!

It was a morning packed with hands-on learning, great questions, and real-world connections to Oregon agriculture. Huge thanks to Farmer Eric and Stan for sharing their time and knowledge with students!

Happy Memorial Day! Today we pause to honor and remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.
As we spend time with family and friends this weekend, we’re grateful for the freedoms we have, and for those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect them.

Happy World Turtle Day! Did you know? Many farms across Oregon work to protect natural areas like wetlands, ponds, and field edges that provide shelter and food for wildlife, including turtles and other native species.
Good farming isn’t just about growing crops. It’s also about caring for the land as a whole ecosystem, where wildlife and agriculture can thrive side by side.
So today, we’re celebrating one of nature’s slow-and-steady reminders that stewardship matters.

Another Adopt a Farmer dairy visit knocked it out of the park! 🐄🥛 Coburg Middle School students had an unforgettable field trip to Harrold’s Dairy, learning firsthand about dairy farming, animal care, and where their food comes from.

Students learned about TMR (Total Mixed Ration) and how dairy cows get a balanced diet, climbed up into a tractor cab, and even got hands-on putting together a calf hutch! From meeting calves to seeing the daily work that keeps a dairy running, students got a true behind-the-scenes look at agriculture in action. 🚜

Huge thanks to Harrold’s Dairy for creating such a fun and meaningful experience for students!

Pratum School 6th–8th graders had a great day out at G&C Farms with Taylor Martin! Students got hands-on experience scouting blackberries, hazelnuts, and radishes while learning how farmers monitor crop health and make decisions throughout the growing season. 🚜

Did you know? Radishes are one of the fastest-growing vegetables — some varieties can be ready to harvest in as little as 3 weeks!

Thank you to G&C Farms for sharing your knowledge and helping students connect classroom learning to real-world agriculture!
