Ever wonder what it means when the corn gets all fluffy on top? That’s the tassel, and it’s releasing pollen to make sweet corn happen. Think of it as the world’s largest farm prom. The boys are tossing pollen, the girls are catching it on the silks, and if everything goes right, we’ll all be eating corn on the cob in a few weeks. 🌽💃🕺

Will it be ready by the 4th? The Lord and the Corn only know!

Doing a corn check and stuck my hand in the stalks only to discover Prince Charming was hiding in there! 🐸🌽

I jumped about 10 feet in the air and let out a scream that probably scared every living thing within a quarter mile. Meanwhile, Prince Charming just sat there looking at me like I was the problem.

He was squishy, slimy, and completely unbothered by the fact that he nearly gave me a heart attack.

But he is happy to report, the corn looks amazing! It’s getting there people!!

What have we been up to this week?

Well, we’re trying not to dehydrate out here, but what can you do besides take a few breaks and drink lots of water?

We’ve been running irrigation nonstop because we were promised two storms and ended up with nothing but sunshine and dust. The crops don’t care what the forecast says—they still need water!

And my second favorite thing of the year happened this week… we planted pumpkins! 🎃

These bright and colorful little seeds in the photo will eventually turn into the pumpkins and winter squash that fill our fields every fall. It’s always amazing to think that something so small grows into those giant orange beauties everyone loves.

So while we’re sweating through some of the hottest days of the year so far, we’re already thinking about fall. 😂🍂🎃

Today is Farmer George’s birthday, the name George literally means “farmer,” and today also happens to be National Corn Day!

Honestly, we couldn’t make that up if we tried.

From sunrise to sunset (and usually long after), George can be found planting, checking fields, fixing equipment, moving irrigation, and making sure every crop gets the attention it needs.

If it grows on this farm, Farmer George made it happen.

Today we celebrate the man behind the sweet corn, tomatoes, pumpkins, and all the other delicious produce we grow on the farm, along with the hay, beef cattle, and countless other projects that keep us going. His dedication, hard work, and passion for farming help bring fresh, local food to your tables all season long.

So if you see George today, be sure to wish him a Happy Birthday and a Happy Corn Day! And let’s all hope Mother Nature gives him the one thing he wants most for his birthday…

Wacky Wednesday: Did You Know?

Did you know strawberries are the only fruit with their seeds on the outside?

The average strawberry has about 200 seeds on its surface!

And technically, each seed is its own tiny fruit.

🐄 Think About It Tuesday 🤔 | National Dairy Month

Super shout out to the 31 remaining dairy farms in the State of New Jersey and especially to our local on-farm processing dairies right here in Hunterdon County!

Fun Fact: Did you know Hunterdon County is home to four on-farm processing dairies? That means these farm families milk the cows (or goats!), process the products, and sell them directly to consumers—all right on the farm.

🚜 Misinformed Mondays by Miss Honey

It breaks our hearts when a perfect, juicy tomato gets passed up because of a small blemish left by a vine.

I can bet my firstborn that the misfit tomato is probably the best-tasting one in the whole bucket! 🍅

A scar, a scratch, or a funny shape doesn’t affect the flavor. In fact, many of those “imperfect” tomatoes spent longer ripening on the vine, developing that rich, homegrown taste we’re all looking for.

Farmers don’t judge a tomato by its looks. We judge it by what really matters: flavor, freshness, and quality.

So next time you’re at the stand, don’t be afraid to adopt the ugly tomato. It might just become your favorite one of the season.

❤️ Every tomato deserves a good home.

Busy, busy day today!

We prepped fields for soybeans and field corn, planted cantaloupe and field-run tomatoes, and are laying plastic now for tomorrow’s watermelon planting. Monday and Tuesday will be all about peppers and eggplant.

The day started before the sun came up, and we’re still going strong.

This is the time of year when we make a lot of difficult phone calls declining parties, BBQs, weddings, showers, and sadly, even funerals. I always tell people, if you want to guarantee we’ll be there, plan it between December and March.

This life isn’t always easy. The hours are long, the work is hard, and there are sacrifices that most people never see. But we truly love what we do. We love growing food, caring for the land, and being part of this community.

So when you’re biting into that sweet corn, slicing a Jersey tomato, or picking out the perfect melon this summer, know that it came with a lot of early mornings, late nights, sore muscles, and missed events.

And honestly? It’s worth it.

Because feeding people and seeing all of you enjoy what we grow makes every sacrifice worthwhile. 🌽🍅🍉❤️🚜

Today, since the fields are so muddy, we took advantage of the downtime and got back into the tunnels. My girls needed a haircut. ✂️🍅

We spent 5 hours removing suckers and pruning back the bottom layers to keep the plants from turning into a jungle in there. This helps create better airflow to prevent disease and keeps the plants focused on producing healthy fruit instead of just giant vines.

Throughout the summer, we’ll keep up with this process to make sure the plants stay healthy and keep those tomatoes coming.

And the best part? We found several little baby tomatoes already growing in the tunnels! 🍅 Which means tomato season is officially getting closer.

Can’t wait to see you all at the stand in a few weeks!
