Today was the first time in five years that I've lost an animal to our swimming pool.
My first drowning incident.

Bob, my chocolate mottled Silkie, was out free-ranging today with the bachelor flock. He was exactly where he loved to beโ€”scratching through the grass, exploring, and enjoying a rare break in the weather.

Some people may see this post as an opportunity to remind me that this was preventable. They wouldn't be entirely wrong. I have an unfenced pool, and I allow my birds to free-range. While I certainly don't encourage them to spend time near the pool, they do occasionally wander that direction.

Today was the day tragedy struck.

I could spend hours beating myself up over every "what if," but I know where that road leads. The truth is that accidents happen, even when we do our best. I love these birds deeply and devote a significant part of my life to keeping them healthy, safe, and happy. The idea of intentionally putting them in harm's way couldn't be further from reality. And I will certainly take actions and other precautions going forward.

It's been raining heavily here in Texas for weeks. Today was the first real break in the weather, and I was excited to let everyone enjoy some much-needed free-range time. The grass has grown taller than usual because the ground has been too wet to mow. Today they were not in an area they typically free range but one of the few not flooded and navigable by chicken feet. Somewhere in that tall grass, Bob got spooked, panicked, flushed and ended up in the pool.

By the time I found him, it was too late. ๐Ÿ’”

I wanted to share this because I think it's important to be honest about life with animals. Social media tends to highlight the hatch days, the fluffy babies, the funny moments, and the successes. Those moments are realโ€”but so are the hard days. Hard days are just as real.

Here, we experience the good, the bad, and everything in between. Treat every opportunity as a learning one.

Just because I don't always share the difficult moments doesn't mean they don't happen.

This week has been a hard one. I've lost several chicks to coccidiosis, broody hens nests have been destroyed at hatch time by unpredictable weather, and now I've lost Bob.

Sometimes it feels like life comes in seasons. Some seasons are warm and full of growth. Others feel cold, rainy, hard and heavy.

If you're walking through one of those harder seasons right now, I hope you know you're not alone.

We're in the rain over here too. The clouds eventually blow away ๐ŸŒฆ

Rest easy, Bob. ๐Ÿ˜ž

Happy Father's Day to all the dads! May your lawns be beautifully maintained, your drinks refreshingly cold, and all your tools be organized and in good working condition!

My dad gave me many gifts, but my favorite is my passion for nature.
Also, that I was never told I couldn't do something because I'm a girl. Well, he didnt have a choice really, he was blessed with all daughters. So, he made tomboys out of us as quickly as he could ๐Ÿคฃ

Who else was going to hold the flashlights or pick rocks out of the field? I also wasn't held back by a disability. Whats a disability? It's an opportunity to use special techniques and out-perform anyone who doubted me to begin with. Thanks dad. โค๏ธ

And a special thank you to the specialist of all specialistsโ€”my baby daddy. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Not only did he take one look at me and said "That's the one", he was so impressed he was adamant the world needed a sequel.

Lord knows he's got his life's work cut out for him, but so far he's absolutely crushing it.
Sassafras 2.0 absolutely adores you, and so do I. โค๏ธ

I haven't seen many new releases over the last decade outside of the animated genre sooo.....
What should I watch?!?? I live for a good plot twist or thriller!

They say when it rains, it pours... and man, has it been pouring here in Texas.

My giant barn roof has finally decided it's had enough. I've patched, sealed, caulked, and slapped on every Band-Aid repair imaginable over the years, but we've officially reached the point where Band-Aids aren't cutting it anymore. The leaks have led to rot, and the rot has made its way into structural areas that simply aren't repairable. The hard truth is that the barn needs to come down.

Unfortunately, that barn is the coop & home to three of my four flocks.

As if that wasn't enough excitement for one season, I also recently received the news I've been dreading: I'll be undergoing a hysterectomy in the near future.

I'm no stranger to abdominal surgeries or recoveries, so I know exactly what that means. For a while, I won't be able to do the heavy lifting and daily farm work that keeps everything running. Between the endless rain, barn repairs, and a surgery countdown clock, I've had to make some difficult decisions.

After a lot of thought, I've decided I'll be downsizing and selling the majority of my free-range flock (the non-Silkies) as well as most of my Heritage Turkey flock. Not Johnny though - sorry ๐Ÿฆƒ

It's not a decision I made lightly, but sometimes reality makes the decision for you.

So, if you've been thinking about adding some beautiful birds to your flock, keep your eyes peeled over the coming weeks.

I'm also tossing around the idea of picking a weekend and having a "Flock Reduction Tent Sale."

Too much? Or would y'all be interested? ๐Ÿ‘€
