I've always said " I'm only one good hail storm away from needing to get a real job" Well, now I can say " I'm only 3 rainy market weekends in a row from needing to get a real job" Conventional thinking says that farmers are subject to the whims of Mother Nature and that storms can create loss by damaging crops and infrastructure. There is another type of damage we face that is seldom talked about. When the weather is sh*tty, people stay home and don't go to markets . In the worst weather events, markets are cancelled. This weekend we were planning our Fall fest. They are predicting 40-60 mph winds and rain from this nor'easter. People should stay home for their safety but this means that not only is our Fall fest postponed until October 3rd, Our Saturday market will most likely be cancelled. This storm is supposed to stick around through Sunday which means our Chester Sunday Market will also be impacted as well. That's 3 Sundays in a row that sales have been diminished or non existent as Chester cancelled 2 weeks ago. because of heavy rain. I don't know what will happen this Sunday yet, but it's not looking good. With all that whining said, we have our Wednesday market this afternoon. If you can, help a brother out and come get some of the best produce of the season , you can hunker down during the storm with some deliciousness. Stay safe
