We know we're a little late to the party, but we wanted to do the competition justice.

The Best Bagger competition is a timed and judged contest for employees who normally bag groceries. There are specific rules that contestants get judged on, including style - which all of our employees have in droves. Thank you to everyone who participated!

We missed the state competition at the HawaiiFoodIndustryAssociation conference a few weeks ago due to scheduling, but we held our own in store competition. We'll be ready for next year's state competition.

Our winner receieved a cash prize, along with a pretty awesome champion belt that she gets to keep.

Congratulations 2026 Puk Sup Best Bagger, Mendy!

RIP to our trash can.

Last night, we receieved a DM letting us know there was a fire starting in the parking lot hut that our workers use as a break room. They were wonderfully proactive and had already called it in and also alerted our security person who was checking out the other side of our property.

By the time we rushed over, the fire was already out and MFD and MPD had left.

We're very grateful that MFD was able to respond quickly and that the fire didn't spread - the gas station is right next door.

We're also very grateful that we have watchful community members that have our backs and actually do things instead of turning a blind eye ♥️

We looked at camera footage and will be contacting MPD today, just to give them as much info as we can. We don't know if it was intentional or a cigarette that just wasn't properly put out.

The tiny hut is for employees only. If you're in there after hours, understand that you will be asked to leave. We really don't want to fence our parking lot.

Our quest to highlight business partners who have been with us through thick and thin continues. For May and June, our spotlight is on !

This local icon has a deep history. Maui Soda Works began in 1884, eventually becoming , and acquired Maui’s Coca-Cola franchise in 1924.

Manuel Nobriga joined the company in 1921, rising to President by 1967. The Nobriga family acquired the business in 1946, perpetuating Manuel’s core principles: treat employees and customers like family, and grow their brands within the community. Today, employs 79 people, with 14 dedicated directly to the frozen business.

In the 1930s, Manuel began making ice cream from scratch. His recipes were so popular that production thrived until his retirement in 1971. The Roselani Ice Cream brand was officially introduced in 1972. In the 1980s, Manuel’s son, Buddy, launched Roselani Premium Ice Cream in local mom-and-pop grocery stores. By the 1990s, Buddy’s daughter, Cathy, expanded distribution across the state of Hawaiʻi.

While exact records are lost to time, both Pukalani Superette and the Maui Soda crew believe our partnership dates back to our original Tanizaki Store days selling Coca-Cola. When Roselani Ice Cream became available, we naturally grew our partnership to include it.

We asked current President & GM, James “Jay” Nobriga (3rd generation), for advice for new business owners: "Develop a good business plan. In manufacturing, make customer safety your #1 priority. In product distribution, make customer service your highest priority. Always support your community... and treat all customers and employees like family."

Despite challenges like the rising costs of island business and a shrinking labor pool, they love their relationships built on Maui. They are deeply committed to giving back, including donating pallets of water after the Kula fire.

Maui Soda & Ice Works just celebrated 100 years, and Roselani Ice Cream will hit that milestone soon. We are honored to be in the "100-year club" together.

Celebrate with us this month! Roselani Ice Cream is on SALE. School is out, summer is here, and it is definitely ice cream season!

Paisley DePonte's pork has hit the shelves!

We have pork steaks, chops, belly, and ground pork all from her hog. The head, feet and spare ribs were already bought in the back 😉

It's no secret that 4H meat is some of the best meat available... Paisley kept an eye on this singular pig for a year. All that care and attention pays off and results in excellent pork that in turn will feed our community.

What about costs? We're not sure on total costs for raising the hog. Maybe can chime in. But our cost at auction fluctuates every year.

The issue is, we want this 4H pork to be accessible, but at the same time we want the 4Her to succeed. So, we're taking the hit this time. Basically, pricing it got so confusing that we just decided to sell the pork in the store below cost at a reasonable price for customers.

Come by this weekend... get some amazing meat raised by two outstanding 4Hers. Once it's gone, you're gonna have to wait until next year.

Caetlyn Lurendez's pig has made it to the store!

We have chops, steaks, ground, belly, and some feet.

If you're new here... the kids in 4H raise livestock and as part of their program there is a judging aspect. They are judged on the animal live, on the auction itself, and on the meat that ultimately comes from that animal. It is remarkable what they go through and learn in this process.

When the pork arrives at the store, we pack it all into trays and label each tray with the 4Her's name.

We want the 4Hers to get used to seeing their names on their product and be proud of it! We hope to one day see these names as part of our normal meat line up. Imagine that!

STAY TUNED... more pork landing very shortly 😉

The inevitable has happened.... time for "What's in the Can" part deux.

To "help" everyone, we stuck it with fellow cans that might be related to it... or not 😉

The can feels full of liquid? With things in it. But doesn't feel too solid (spam-like).

We're gonna take a few days to guess. We will report back when we open it... need to find the can opener now.

The crew tonight really really wanted in on Shawn's final picture...

Today we celebrated with our version of Maui's greatest hits: Sam Sato's noodles and cheeseburgers, , and Komoda Bakery stick donut.

Manager Shawn will be off on a new adventure soon and is officially what we refer to as a Pukalani Superette alumni. It's a bittersweet moment when you thought the band would stay together forever, but we couldn't be happier for him.

We refuse to call this a goodbye. We've already stated our expectations of many texts and visits and updates. Or we'll send out a search party.

Until next time, Shawn, best of luck! You have 60 aunties, uncles, and cousins over here cheering you on!
