2024 brought some big changes to Katfish Salmon Co. One of them being a new (old) boat, the 47ft wooden double-ender, F/V Aloma.

I said goodbye to running the F/V Grace this fall, and in fact, the first photo on this post is the last king salmon I hauled over her rails this fall, (there were definitely tears). As any bost caretaker will tell you, im hoping it's not her last salmon.

Moving forward, Katfish Salmon Co. will be a family run operation. I’ve run my own boat for seven years now, and I wouldn’t take back any of those experiences, especially the past two seasons I’ve spent fishing solo. The Grace was the best first boat I could have hoped for, and she taught me so many important lessons over the years; how to fail but not give up, how to trust myself. She held me safely for 7 years, but now it's time for a new chapter. My husband Luke and I will be co-captaining the Aloma this spring, and we are both looking forward to creating new memories together.

I picked this image because as I saw a flower floating by me in the middle of the ocean one day while I was out fishing, it honestly surprised me. I wouldn't call it shocking, but I'd say it was enough to get me thinking about the home Id left behind on this big blue sea. I even wrote a poem about it at one point. While surprising, but also grounding, that flower reminded me of all the different parts that make me, me. I mourned, accepted what I couldn't change, and forged a new path forward.

That being said, I've found the words of activist, trainer, strategist, and author, Daniel Hunter, so insightful. I was able to process and channel all the emotions coming up in a way that worked for me. So I'm passing these words and links to his work along for others that might benefit from them:

https://commonslibrary.org/collection/daniel-hunter-collection/

"1. Trust yourself
2. Find others you trust
3. Grieve
4. Release that which you cannot change
5. Find your path
6. Do not obey in advance, do not self censor
7. Re-orient your political map
8. Get real about power
9. Handle fear, make violence rebound
10. Envision a positive future"

Read much more lengthy descriptions of these key points in the link above if this speaks to you.

I aim to foster a deeper connection to peoples relationship with the food they eat, and offer meaningful solutions that lessen the gap between the person catching the food and that food reaching the consumers plate.

I love partnering with

The full circle moment of getting to hand put and ship fish that I've carefully caught and sourced all summer is truly one of the things that keeps my love for this job alive.

Besides feeling like I'm being compensated fairly for my labor that extends well beyond the actual fishing season, the connection and traceability I can provide my customers is so vital. I choose the word traceable because I feel like this is essential when discussing sustainable fisheries. I could certain dive deeper into what it truly means to be sustainable, but for this post, Im choosing to highlight the prong of traceability.

I catch a large portion of what I sell, and if I am unable to catch a particular species aboard my boat, it is thoughtfully sourced and the method of how it was caught described on my website.

Curious consumers are welcome, ask questions. I'm here for the dialogue!

The F/V Grace pulling up to the ice shute in Petersburg, AK this summer taken by my friend .e.kowalski ! Call this an appreciation post for the fishing town of Petersburg💙

I base my direct market operations out of here for many reasons, including but not limited to: community cold storage facility, public cranes, 24hr harbourmaster communication so I can run to town and still dock in the middle of the night if needed (often needed). They are truly here for the fishermen of this town, and provide many essential services needed to run this business from afar. Many towns twice Petersburgs size don't touch the level of service provided here.

Needless to say, this has truly felt like a second home to me, and I love being a part of this community for four months out of the year.

Inside Passage fall 2024. A few snapshots of the biannuall trip i take with Grace from AK to WA. The boat is tied up in the commercial boat basin safe and sound, as I reflect on what it means to transition from a summer spent at sea to a land based life.

"Translating my summers and trying to understand theirs feels like a full cup of water that I knock over and spill onto the floor. The words seep into the carpet: I am one person and two people." [Excerpt from my chapbook, Inward]

Where old growth forest meets the sea, trollers rely on healthy forest and ocean ecosystems to sustain the salmon runs that feed us. Being on the front lines and observing the natural world, day in and day out, makes us in tune with the natural world in a way few are able to be. It makes us conservationists, environmentalists, and stewards of these wild lands and precious resources.

When you purchase seafood, who you purchase it from and how it was harvested matters.

Sometimes it doesn't make it out if the bag and onto the plate but when I do show restraint, I'll toast a bagel with some cream cheese and thin sliced red onion, and sometimes throw a few capers on if they're around!
