Goose Island Farm Beans!

We were thrilled to bring in these gorgeous, locally grown beans last year— and you seemed as excited to bring them home. They flew off the shelves! What a delightful surprise!

This week, we received a small delivery of just a few outstanding varieties. Check out the descriptions for each on their labels— there’s some great bean lore.

We hope to get more varieties in early winter, so grab a bag or two now to tide you over until then.

Quince!

If only instagram was scratch’n’sniff 🤤

This aromatic orchard fruit originates from SW Asia and the Caucasus Region and has been grown for over 4000 years. With over 200 known varieties and a legion of fans across the world, it’s a fruit to know and love.

But it’s best to know how to use it! Hard, tough and astringent when raw, it’s a fruit you must cook to enjoy.

Eaters may be most familiar with Quince thanks to Spanish Membrillo but there’s so many uses beyond that!

Poached, baked, juiced, fermented, stewed, sweet and savory…there’s so many applications!

Let us know how you use Quince!

We are SO excited for Apple Fest (tomorrow, Sunday 10/11) that we just had to show you a few of our favorites that we’ll be sampling.

Starting with none other than the stunning Mountain Rose. Yes, it’s really that color, and yes it holds its hue when baked or cooked!

Compare a Hanners Jumbo to a Mountain Rose and you can see why it has its oversized name. Hanners Jumbo was discovered in Hood River— drop that fact at parties, it’s always a hit 😉

Green Dragon was a, if not THE, fan favorite the past two years. Maybe it’s the name, maybe that it’s flavor is reminiscent of green apple Jolly Ranchers, maybe we influenced opinions by gushing about it. Better come find out!

This year we’re putting forward Winter Banana as a solid contender. It might be the cilantro of apples— some do, and some do not pick up notes of banana!

Mutsu, you knobby wobbly apple, you. This variety always wins for best shape.

Looking for heirloom apples? We’ve got ‘em! Cox’s Orange Pippin is just one of many we’ll have including culinary standout, Ashmead’s Kernel!

Yellowstone Radicchio!

Just a few years ago you couldn’t get your hands on this delightful, mellow and supple variety. And here we are (thanks Sauvie Island Growers Culinary Breeding Network 💗 by Lane Selman Chicory Week )

If you’re on the fence about chicories, Yellowstone is a great variety to start with. Toss it up with a rich dressing, add some salty cheese, nuts for a bit of crunch, and something sweet to balance it all out. Congrats, you’re officially part of the radicchio salad lovers club!
