Beautiful, local squash has arrived and we couldn't me more excited! 🤩 We also received some extra special Candy Roaster squash (first picture) from Stonecipher Farm! This delicious squash is native to the areas surrounding the Cherokee tribes in the states of present-day western North Carolina, northern Georgia, and eastern Tennessee. It was cherished as a traditional food for its sweet flavor, ability to withstand winter frost, and long shelf life.

The Portland Lantern Walk returns this October 25th! 🏮 Gather at Deering Oaks Park for a free, family-friendly evening filled with music, community singing, and glowing lanterns.

In honor of Indigenous People’s Day the Portland Food Co-op will be donating 5% of today's sales to Niweskok. We invite you to join us in supporting their infrastructure fund ( www.niweskok.org/donate ) so they can continue to build their forever home on their community farm and education center in coastal Penobscot territory.⁠

Niweskok is a collaboration of food and medicine providers working to rematriate Wabanaki lifeways through engaging with kinship responsibilities and reclaiming traditional foods and healing. They prioritize restoring the Penobscot Bay region as a Wabanaki foodhub. In January 2025, Niweskok marked a historic homecoming with the rematriation of a 245-acre coastal farm in traditional Penobscot territory. They are currently raising money to continue necessary renovations and infrastructure development including: an outdoor kitchen classroom, a second unit of employee housing, a dance hall and indoor programming center, and a commercial kitchen. All development projects are being undertaken with Wabanaki values at the center.

To receive the discount, just let the cashier know at the beginning that you will be paying with your EBT SNAP card.
