Thank you NOAA Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary for helping maintain our local Dungeness Crab fishery. One of the best - and certainly most delicious!

Let me Shell you about it! It’s recreational crab season in most Washington waters! Healthy crabs make for a healthy ecosystem and fishery! 🦀

The famous Dungeness crab (Metacarcinus magister) of NOAA’s Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary needs a strong shell to thrive along the rocky shores and in the sea. But our coastal waters are changing and so are their shells! Higher levels of carbon dioxide gas in the air gets absorbed into the ocean, making the waters they live in more acidic–a process called ocean acidification. Researchers continue to investigate how to help these crab live successfully in the sanctuary while still allowing humans and marine animals to enjoy them in the winter months. https://olympiccoast.noaa.gov/protect/ocean-acidification-sentinel-site.html
