Learn to "Talk Like a Local" When You Visit Hollis Country...

One of the best parts of exploring rural Arkansas is learning the names of the places that make this area special. The challenge? Some of them aren't pronounced quite the way they look!

Here's a quick primer on how folks around here say some of our local place names:

📍 Fourche — Pronounced like "push," but with an F sound. Just pretend the "r" isn't there.

📍 Ouachita — "Wash-uh-tah"

📍 Petit Jean — "Petty Gene"

📍 Forked Mountain — Two syllables is key: "For-ked"

📍 Saline — "Suh-Leen"

📍 Casa — Usually "Kay-Suh," though some old-timers still call it "Casey"

📍 Oppelo — "Opp-uh-low"

📍 Solgohachia — "Saw-guh-hatch-ee"

📍 Satuma — "Suh-Too-Muh"

📍 Aplin — It looks simple, but we hear it mispronounced all the time. It's "App-Lynn," with the emphasis on "App"

📍 Adona — "Uh-Dough-Nuh"

📍 Perryville — Our county seat has two accepted local pronunciations. Some say it just as it's spelled: "Perry-ville." Others around the county say "Pair-Vul."

📍 Toad Suck & Ni**od — No special pronunciation lessons needed here! They're just two Arkansas place names that visitors always get a kick out of hearing.

With a little practice, you'll be talking like a local in no time!

What other Arkansas place names have you heard pronounced differently than you expected? Let us know in the comments!

Front Porch Thoughts – There’s something special about old country stores...

Not just the sandwiches, the pie, the cold drinks, or the creaky floors… but what these places represent. In rural America, country stores have long been more than a stop along the road. They’ve been gathering places. Story-sharing places. Landmarks of community, hospitality, and everyday life.

And preserving that history matters.

It’s something we take seriously here at the Hollis Country Store — and we know we’re not alone.

Just last month, we took a week-long “country store tour” through Tennessee, and what a joy it was to visit so many wonderful old stores along the way. Each one had its own story… delightful owners… local traditions… and its own unique offerings. But what connected them all was something deeper: every one of them was doing its part to preserve and share this special piece of Rural Americana.

That’s what we’re trying to do here in Hollis, Arkansas, too.

To keep alive a place where neighbors gather, travelers feel welcome, traditions are remembered, and a simple country store still has a story worth telling.

In a fast-moving world, these places remind us to slow down a little… visit a while… and remember where we come from.

And if there’s one small thing we’d encourage this month ahead, it’s this: shop small, shop local, and don’t forget your rural businesses. These places matter. They help tell the story of small-town America — and every visit, every meal, every purchase helps keep these traditions, communities, and pieces of living history alive for the next generation.

From our little corner of the Ouachitas, we hope y’all have a wonderful week ahead — and thank you for helping keep this history and heritage alive with us.

What a wonderful weekend at the Hollis Country Store! ❤️

A big THANK YOU to everyone who made our old country store part of their weekend... We had folks stop in from all over - from our neighbors right here on the South Fourche to visitors from states far away (we think our cousins Clay & Karleen from Northern California may have been the longest journey yesterday - correct us if we're wrong!) But no matter where you came from, we truly enjoyed visiting with each and every one of you.

Pictured sitting here are Sharon, Sippy, and Bobby, who made the drive all the way from Mountainburg to try our famous sandwiches — and let us tell you, they were an absolute blast! Thank you for coming to see us!

We’ve also added some wonderful new items to the store from Potter Creations — including beautiful handcrafted walking sticks perfect for exploring our mountain trails, along with some really nice new t-shirts. Be sure to check them out on your next visit!

Have a great week, friends — and hopefully we’ll see you all again next Saturday at the Hollis Country Store!

One of our favorite parts of visiting the old Hollis Country Store as kids? Standing in front of the candy counter, trying to decide what treat to take home!

One of the sweetest traditions at the historic Hollis Country Store has quickly become our homemade pies — all made from scratch each week by Gena right here at the store. Folks have been driving from hours away just to enjoy a slice (or two!) and spend a little time soaking in that old-fashioned country store atmosphere that’s getting harder and harder to find these days.

Every week the flavors may change a little, so be sure to watch our Facebook posts to see what pies we’ll be serving up each Saturday. Some of our regular favorites include coconut cream, chocolate, and peanut butter… and from time to time you might also find apple, custard, or buttermilk waiting in the pie case.

And trust us — they are all yum, yum good!! 😋

So make plans to come see us this Saturday, grab a slice of pie, and enjoy a little “Hollis Time” here in the Ouachita Mountains.
