This weather is just BEGGING for a big pot of black-eyed peas! šŸ«˜

With the cooler weather today and the next few days, thereā€™s nothing better than a warm pot of home grown black-eyed peas simmering on the stove!

And the best part? Weā€™ve already done the hard work for you!

We grew ā€™em, picked ā€™em, and shelled ā€™em. All you have to do is dump them in the pot, add some stock, and let them cook!

Serve them with a big slice of cornbread and youā€™ve got yourself some GOOD eating!

If youā€™re a grass nerd like Layton, youā€™re going to LOVE this one!

And if youā€™re not quite as excited about grass as he is, stick around anyway for a little update on whatā€™s growing out here on the farm!

Who knew grass could be such an exciting topic?! Well, Layton did.

8 people. 8.5 hours. 25,000 strawberry plants. AND THATā€™S A WRAP! šŸ“

Strawberry planting is officially DONE!

It took a whole crew to make it happen! One driving the tractor, a few taking turns planting, a few making sure the transplanter stayed stocked at all times so we didnā€™t have to stop, and a few finishing up clipping the plants. (If you missed the calf clipper video, go watch it!)

And depending on which job you had, you either thought we were moving WAY too fast or WAY too slow!

Our whopping speed? 3.5 MPH!

It may not sound like much, but 8.5 hours later, weā€™ve got 25,000 strawberry plants in the ground!

Thereā€™s a whole lot of work that goes into growing those sweet red berries, and this is just the beginning.

Now, if we could just get some of that rain the weathermen keep talking about, that would be GREAT!

25,000 plants down. Now we wait for strawberry season! šŸ“

Yes, those are calf clippers. And no, using them on strawberry plants was definitely NOT on my bingo card this year! šŸ˜‚

Weā€™re busy prepping our strawberry plants for transplanting, which means giving them all a pretty serious haircut!

Iā€™m not going to lie, it almost feels like a sin cutting all that beautiful green growth off perfectly healthy plants. But thereā€™s a reason behind the madness! Weā€™re trimming them back so the leaves donā€™t get hung up in the transplanter when we plant.

We started out using scissors, but quickly decided we needed to think smarter, not harder!

So out came the old calf clippers! They require a little more oil than a normal clipping job, but theyā€™re getting the job done a WHOLE lot faster.

Who knew cattle equipment would come in handy for growing strawberries?!

Stay tuned for the transplanting video! The work that goes into growing strawberries starts LONG before you ever see that first red berry!
