It's the final day of Down to Earth Markets' National Farmers Market Week "Voices of Our Markets" series ✨! Read on to hear the “why” behind what drives Alyson at Nusra Farms and Latresa in Morningside Park to come to sell and work in the farmers market.

𝐀𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐨𝐧, 𝐍𝐮𝐬𝐫𝐚 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 (𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐞𝐚)
In 2024, I returned home from working in the tech space and traveling as a digital nomad. My mom and I were both deeply grieving the loss of my dad. My mom showed me these overgrown grapevines growing on our property. We started pruning and nurturing the vines which became like our “grapes of grief” and our rescue grapes. We also have two large old chestnut trees that will rain chestnuts onto your head. We both wanted to sell our grapes and chestnuts in the farmers market, so I’m now a full-time farmer and love getting my hands in the dirt.

I recently became a fan of farmers markets when I discovered Down to Earth’s Morningside Park market in my neighborhood. I’d known farmers markets existed through NYC, but prior to having reproductive health conditions, I hadn’t thought too much about the benefits of consuming locally grown produce and eating what’s in season.

Both of my grandparents were dairy farmers in New Hampshire. My father’s interest was in tree fruit and from an early age I was involved in the farming world. Farming is the only thing that I have ever wanted to do. I first managed farms for other growers until I was able to purchase the farm I have today.

I went to school close to the farmers market in Union Square, so stopping by for an apple c***r donut and to browse the beautiful vegetables and flowers was always a part of my after-school routine. I really started to get into it as a main source of produce when I was abroad in Europe during the summer I was 18. The outdoor market was close to my apartment at the time, and it was lovely.

𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞, 𝐘𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦
The farm is my “habitat”. I enjoy being able to produce something tangible that benefits our community. I’m a hands-on person who enjoys the variety of work on a farm and the challenges that present themselves. I like being self-employed. The work week is long but rewarding.

Food is a basic right, even though our systems don’t treat it as such. Being part of the local food system allows me to contribute to something tangible and necessary, including access, equity, and connection. I have found that while purpose in life is not limited to what we do for work, it matters to me that the time I spend working aligns with my values. Contributing to local food systems gives me that alignment and keeps me motivated to help build something better.

We’re sharing “Voices of Our Markets” every day during National Farmers Market Week! Read on to hear the “why” behind what drives Carrie at Willow Pond Sheep Farm and Kevin, Operations Coordinator and former Cunningham Park Farmers Market Manager, to come to sell and work in the farmers market.

𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞, 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐏𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦
I was motivated to become a farmer by the opportunity to raise livestock in a humane way. There are a lot of factory farms here in the U.S. and worldwide and their practices are not always humane. I wanted to show myself and others the possibilities of doing things another way.

For instance, there are many issues with cow dairy which is typically produced in massive volumes at industrial scale. There has been a lot of breeding of Holstein cows to select for unnaturally large udders to promote milk production. Plus, the impact of cows in hillier areas creates a lot of soil erosion, whereas sheep are lighter on the land and don’t do as much damage.

Like many people, I grew up shopping at big chain grocery stores. I wanted to become involved in our local food system after working for years in some of New York's premiere kitchens. I wanted to complete my understanding of how food makes its way into our homes and restaurants. Since then, I've developed a philosophical understanding of our food system, and I believe that we have a right to eat that is not always met by our systems. Farmers markets are a big part of meeting that right.

𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐞, 𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦 (𝐂𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐡𝐚𝐦 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤, 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐒𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞)
We started our farm out of a need to provide our growing family with wholesome food. Back in 2011, Samer read an article that Egypt rejected several tons of corn from the USA because it was GMO (Genetically Modified Organism). We looked to our own faith to understand what kinds of food we are supposed to be eating. We discovered that, as Muslims, we are supposed to be eating food that isn’t just halal, but also Tayyab – which means wholesome, pure and good. We rejected GMO foods and wanted to feed our family wholesome food. Since we couldn’t find the food we needed to feed our family, we started making it ourselves.

𝐉𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐡, 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫
Farmers markets were introduced to me at a young age. My parents would take me and my brother on vacation to Vermont every year, and it is in Vermont that my love for farmers markets began. The fresh eggs and corn we would buy were something I looked forward to every summer.

𝐉𝐮𝐝𝐢, 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐬 (𝐋𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭, 𝐑𝐲𝐞)
I’ve been farming since I was born. My parents had a poultry farm with 2,600 chickens and we also raised pigs and cows. My earliest memory is of my mom asking me to help collect eggs. My husband Stan and I took over his family’s farm in 1980. That’s when I was introduced to farming fruits and veggies. Being a woman and being out on the road in a big truck driving to farmers markets means that people assume that it’s my husband who is out in the fields doing most of the work. But I work just as hard.

𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐡, 𝐑𝐲𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫
I’ve always loved farmers markets and consider myself a foodie. I love to cook and explore new foods or food destinations. One of the first things I look for when traveling is the details on their local farmers market. It is a fantastic way to explore the local community! I also love to entertain, so each of these areas are fulfilled when running the market every week.

𝐄𝐝 𝐌𝐜𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐚, 𝐒𝐎𝐕𝐀 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐬 (𝐋𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭, 𝐑𝐲𝐞, 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐥𝐞)
In 2016, I watched the documentary film Food, Inc. about the industrial food system and treatment of factory farmed animals, which deeply moved me. At the time, I had been working for major banks in Manhattan for over thirty years, Rose (Ed’s wife) was a medical assistant, and our children were fully grown and living independently. Seeing this movie gave me an aha moment and I said to Rose “That’s it! We’re buying a farm and producing good food for people!”

𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐚, 𝐋𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫
I’m local and moved to Larchmont in 2008. My husband, daughter and I love living here and being part of this vibrant community. I used to walk our dog through the market and then come back to pick items up. How times have changed! Being active (rowing, running/walking), I’m always focused on healthy food options and knowing where your food comes from.
