How do we know Spring is here? Our first clue is out kitchen turns into a hatchery. New this year is our very own turkey eggs from our all Winter freeloading turkey flock Our Heritage birds have braved the elements and have been busy (we hope) being love birds for weeks. By Wednesday the incubator will be full and started. The broad breasted breed we normally raise for meat were delicious but are so unhealthy with leg problems and stress from too rapid growth. These birds are very multipurpose and healthy making great additions to your farm or your dinner plate. Planning on raising 30 plus birds, please let us know if you are interested in a special bird on your table for special guests in November. Will start posting picture soon.

Going legit as much as possible. Anyone that runs a business, no matter how small, knows the grind to comply with endless regulations to sell any product to your neighbor. Free country? ummm yeah, not so much. Anyway, first thing first is we are changing our name to Leisenring's Natural Homestead. Please add when you see it with your "LIKE" and continue to feel free to add comments, suggestions, and such to us as we post updates. Meat, Chickens, Turkeys, and a few Ducks will be available soon, Duck eggs are getting hard to come by with our added customers but hopefully late this fall the new flock additions will start to lay eggs and ease the pressure. I will also try and do a better job posting new stuff...I will try. Thanks to all that follow!

Just an update to our Facebook "Likes".Jo is getting back on the mend from gallbladder surgery and Bo is trying to balance work/recliner time trying to stay out of ER himself. Asparagus is sprouting, all 100 glorious feet of it, and we should start harvest next week already. Pictures will be provided in the near future. The raspberry canes are turning green and also looking spectacular. Blackberries are asking about another expansion but not sure we are going to let them this year. Garlic and potatoes are going in the ground next week if weather allows it. Also by next weekend greenhouse gets cranked up or Bo has threatened to dismantle it. Fruit trees have bloomed and budded up nice, first time fruit this year, we can hardly wait. Incubator is loaded and will start the timer on Monday. Loaded with Swedish Blue and Khaki duck eggs and a few turkey eggs from our friends at Neff's Produce. The duck eggs we donated to Eastern Middle School will be due to hatch in 14 more days and the ducklings come home about three weeks after that. Anyone wanting ducklings of any breed please let us know. Otherwise the hens get a happy home here and the drakes...well the drakes go to freezer camp to be followed by a trip to the smoker or BBQ. No complainers so far out of the ducks. Pictures of it all will be coming soon. Feel free to visit and don't forget a dozen duck eggs for your breakfast of over easy.

On a limited basis we have a couple all natural turkeys left and we have some parted out as leg quarters and breasts. If interested please leave a message for us and we will get back to you. Was a wonderful year of learning and improving our little homestead. Already looking towards spring to better utilize the new greenhouse and getting the most goodies from our small slice of heaven.

Will get off our lazy butt's and post a few pics soon, how the spring gets by us all before you know it. Strawberries are upon us and they could not be more delightfully tasty. Chickens love the caps and the ones that birds got to first. 22 more hatched out ducklings finally big enough to turn off the heat lamp at night. Last hatched ducks are slowly being sorted as the males are starting to show their distinguishing features. I didn't know the Swedish Blue ducks were so vocal. They announce our arrival every morning to feed and water them all and collect eggs. Have to get things organized in the pens before the arrival of our 20 turkey pullets. This week we are focusing on greenhouse work and mulching...so much to do, so little time it seems.

Start planning your seeds and plants now instead of wishing for spring. Don't forget to rotate your garden plan just like a farmer does. Also think how you may want to expand your plants that gift you year after year with fruit. All this takes time to plan and now is when you have that time...Ok, some of us have that time now.

New plans for us include expanding blackberry plot, potatoes, and raspberry plot. Reducing tomatoes (I think every year). Adding a greenhouse and building more raised beds. The duck pens will grow as we look to add 24 straight run ducks, males to freezer camp and females to the eggs pens. We get plenty of duck eggs for ourselves and we have given some away. Maybe this fall we will have enough to sell some as they are so delicious and healthier than chicken eggs. Asking around before ordering turkeys, didn't have enough for everyone this year but don't want to get to many for our freezers either. Still undecided on spring boiler chickens, may hold off until the fall for them unless folks show up at our door with torches looking for them.

Finally...Pig or no pig is the question? Neff's Produce provides us with a wonderful half, but is there any more satisfaction from doing something on your own? Can Jo and Abby help with the raising and then send it off to freezer camp? Jo already said no to rabbits even though growing up we always had them and they are so yummy. Some battles are not worth having for a happy home.

Stay tuned, please feel free to share ideas and recipes...we have done everything wrong at least once and are happy to help if we learned from it.
