Steinbeck called Route 66 “the Mother Road” because it carried Dust Bowl families west in search of a better life.

Decades later, another migration reshaped the road in Oklahoma City. Along Classen Boulevard, refugees and immigrant families breathed new life into an aging stretch of old 66 — helping create one of the country’s largest Asian American districts.

Today, from the Milk Bottle Building to the markets, bakeries and restaurants of the Asian District, the old highway tells a very American story — and a very Route 66 story.
