The Indigenous Foodways Summit got off to a great start today! We witnessed the historic signing of an Alternative Funding Arrangement between the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and Connecticut USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.

MPTN initially used EQUIP program funds from NRCS to build out their maple sugar operations. MPTN built an access road and bridge, which improved water quality, and implemented energy conservation improvements, which allowed the Tribal Nation to expand from hundreds of taps to thousands. This relationship led to the AFA, which broadens MPTN’s sovereign authority by bringing the administration of conservation dollars in-house and expanding financial support for conservation practices.

Last week, Jeremy Whipple, Farm Manager, and his team - Shi, Matt, Bryan and Jason, went out to gather seaweed for the annual Pequot Days clambake. 🌊 ☀️ 🐠

The clambake consists of heating up rocks for a couple hours and then placing the seaweed on top of hot rocks. The seaweed not only adds flavor, but helps steam the food for a delicious meal for the community.
