Coming to the shop 9/13 🌱❤️
This Monday I will be welcoming 1/2 of a steer from Upstate New York! This is an exciting and new venture for me, and something I hope to continue along with the other high quality products offered at the store. This will also be my first time breaking down a cow at the store, and have asked a few chef friends to come assist (I certainly know I will need help carrying it!) More details to come, but here’s a picture of these guys this summer. Their hill looks out onto the Green Mountains of Vermont. -Jennifer

So excited to share that we will be selling cooked and cured salumi by @lasalumina !!!🐷❤️ For a long time, I have thought about what new things can be offered at the shop, but once I was introduced to Eleanor and Gianpiero’s products I knew where to start. Using centuries old techniques learned in Italy, and made by hand in upstate New York, the couple also locally sources the pasture raised pigs from farms in the area. Truly in love with the taste and how they use the whole animal to make them. If you’ve never met some of the products, particularly the cooked salumi, they will instantly become favorites on your antipasto platter. Ok no more talking, come to Elizabeth Street to taste!!!

Remembering Moe this week and everyday. ❤️ It is hard to believe it has been a year since his passing. Thank you so much to our followers this past year for your support, as Jen Jen could not have continued without your encouragement and love. Although Moe couldn’t wrap his head fully around social media, he loved to be in front of a camera or sharing his stories. Looking forward to many more years of sharing our Elizabeth Street with all of you, from wherever you may be at the moment!!
Also, please note that our store will be closed through Sunday April 11th to be with family and will reopen Monday.

Jen Jen for @woolrich 🥩❤️ in collaboration with @neighborhoodspot, who highlighted several beloved shops in downtown NYC. Our family is our neighborhood... those who have been here for generations to those with stars in their eyes, to our visitors we miss dearly from all of the world. You are all what makes our butcher shop tick and what makes this city so special.

Stop by the Woolrich Soho store tomorrow to support the pop-up and coat drive benefiting our neighbors The Bowery Mission, a service to those in need since 1879!

THE MEAT MOBILE 🚗🥩
Tomorrow will be 6 months without our favorite guy, so I wanted to share a funny clip about Moe and his car. Many of you may not know, but he drove until about 93 years old when I first started driving him. From 2005, Meat by Moe was a short film made by friend and customer @brianpaccione. Additionally, Brian’s family was a frequent customer to the store, and when they moved to Brooklyn, Moe continued to deliver to them ❤️

Mary, Moe, and me on film.
I believe the first two were taken (early 90s and early 00s) by our neighbor and the third is from @rebecahuntt last week.
And yes, the rubber tree plant in the left window is the same!

Wow, what a week. I am so touched by all the people who came out to support these last few days, who have sent gifts, or provided words of encouragement. Something I wanted to post a while ago, but sharing now after watching a recent briefing by @nygovcuomo in which he spoke about his grandfather’s work. Several years ago, Moe retrieved this book from a boarded up closet in the back room. Inside, he found pendant lamps from the original store (two of them are now in the windows) and this book. Contrary to the title, it did not house scores of bridge games. My great grandmother, his mother Mary, kept record of customers’ purchases during the Great Depression, those who couldn’t afford to pay her and her husband right away. Some accounts are restaurants, family, friends... and if she didn’t write down their exact name, she knew who they were. She scratched out the amount when it was paid.
When I found this book in storage, I kept it by the register. I began to keep my own record of purchases. If I forgot their name I would write something to help me remember them. If a new customer asked why I wrote people’s name next to their order, I would show them this book.
Seeing this book again is a reminder of the difficult times that were had. How could my great grandparents afford to lend money? They probably couldn’t. And how did they know it would be paid back? I think about the loyalty of our neighborhood. I miss our customers, all of you! And hope to reopen soon. ❤️ jen @ Moe the Butcher - Albanese Meats and Poultry

Where do I begin today? Our final car photo, because driving you is where these final years began.... We were so worried of how you would recover after all this. If the virus didn’t kill you, not being at the store again certainly would’ve. It took a global pandemic to get you to stop going. Even your final day there, I was yelling at you “you can’t invite the tourists in right now! Keep your gloves and scarf on!”
This was a sudden 24 hours for all of us, but when you are with someone who’s 95, the fear of death walks with you everyday. In the early mornings I would hear him shuffle over to the bathroom and then I’d relax, falling back asleep. And then we would make the most of that day.
I’m so proud to have given you a beautiful life in these final years. We gave them all quite a show didn’t we? I made you a promise a while ago, that when you died I would take over the store. Don’t worry I’ve caught the family bug, i’ll go back soon enough. And God knows, it may be the only thing to get me through this time. It wasn’t always easy, and the ones who know were there when I fought back tears. If we were mad at each other, we always had the car ride home before we apologized. And it never stopped us from trying again tomorrow. Everyone would say, you are doing it Jen. And now I can say I did it. I have no regrets about that. I did what I wanted to do for you.

Let me paint you a picture this morning with my words. It’s 6:00am and the birds are chirping.
He finally retired. And they’re all so happy you could join them at last:
“You finally showed up!” My grandmother has been patiently waiting for all these years, making a big pot of crab sauce like its 4th of July.
Your mother, sitting in her chair outside “MOMO!” Vinny Vella in his. They pinch your cheeks.
“Sheeny Moe where’ve ya been!” All your friends are there too, your uncles and cousins. Your grandfather making wine, playing cards. Your father. The whole family. Even the dogs.
“A toast to Rudy!” They’ve been having the feasts up here all along and now the fireworks. They’re for you, San Gandolfo. La Marcia Reale begins to play with all the trumpets of heaven. And this time you know the words to sing. Because the best part is your memory is with you. I did a good job of hiding it from everyone, but only mom and I heard your cries in bed. The blessed mother answered your prayers and has given your mind back. “Long live the King! Viva l’Italia! Viva San Gandolfo!”
You were alone on this earth for years, but as you would say to grandma, “Not yet Jen, not yet. They need me down here.”
How selfish were we to keep him for so long.

As I write this now, my grandfather is at the hospital due to complications from covid-19. Moe is certainly a fighter and has been through more than you or I ever could. I just wish I was there to hold his hand, to stroke his forehead, to lay in bed with him, like I have been for the past two weeks as we recovered together. He was supposed to come home yesterday, but things suddenly got worse, which is why I am writing this today. I didn’t want anyone to worry about him, and he wouldn’t want that either. But please, today, I ask you to think of him, pray for him and send us your strength. ❤️ -Jennifer

I miss this view from where I stand at our shop. I miss my Elizabeth Street family. Sadly yesterday we lost Millie, who has lived on the block most of her life. She loved this block, her family, and she treated me like one of her own. I always invite my ladies to sit outside the store to keep Moe company. But really they keep me company. Sometimes I’m too busy to sit outside, but when I can, I sit with them and have cookies and coffee. I listen to them talk, and sometimes I ask them questions. My grandpa was never much for chit chat, but he loves them all. I treat them like my grandmothers, because our elders are what we have left of the neighborhood. I’m so fortunate to have them around.
For my 30th birthday I invited them over to the store for 3pm, but they came with their chairs at 1 o’clock. I always sneak some footage of them when I can.
Fortunately, I saw Millie the last day at the store as she was being taken inside. I waved and ran over. We couldn’t hug, but we were so happy to see eachother.
We’ll miss you Millie 💝 -Jennifer

A photo taken of our last day for now. Thank you to all our customers and followers for checking in on Moe and his health. Thank you to our friends and neighbors for keeping an eye on the store. Our family’s business has stood the test of time. The Great Depression and throughout the many ups and downs of our neighborhood, when no one wanted to be here, and when it became too expensive to be here. We know you will come back when the time is right!

This is the first time I have publicly spoken about my work as a butcher, as a caretaker for my grandfather @moethebutcher, and about saving a little store that makes a lot of people happy.

Jen.....Albanese Meats and Poultry is getting ready to majorly expand...and you are the owner and butcher in charge!! Moe is smiling down and seeing it all as it should be. Sharpen those knives....change is a comin'....and you deserve it all!!!
Saw your beautiful story on Humans of New York! Glad you're keeping the dream alive
So we used to live across the street at 259, and I can remember the first time I met Moe and he "GOT ME" with a ribeye :) I saw the new merch and it looks great, but I NEED a grilling apron with that logo on it!
I am from the Tampa Bay Area in Florida. A customer of mine came in today and is from the Little Italy area...in reminiscing about his own family and life in Little Italy he remarked upon Moe the Butcher and shared his story with me and my boss. I was curious and went right to google to look up Moe the Butcher...I am so glad I did. I wish I could have met him. If I ever get to New York City I will for sure go to Albanese Meats and Poultry. So sorry for your loss🙏
Heart. Broken. Rest in peace. I had the Honor of capturing this last year. May the entire family find peace in this time. So much love to you from Brooklyn
I had yet another amazing holiday turkey from Moe this Christmas. His butcher shop on Elizabeth street is truly the last of the old school stores in the neighborhood. While discussing the turkey, the holidays and life Moe and and his granddaughter Jennifer asked me to choose a record to play. I went with Louis Prima. The best for the best!
